Single lesson
Enoch Walks with God
Genesis 5:18–24
This lesson helps children follow the short account of Enoch in Genesis 5:18–24. They will sequence what the passage says, notice the repeated statement about Enoch, and discuss the action and outcome named in the verses.
Before you teach
These verses are part of a family record that names Jared, Enoch and Methuselah. The passage gives ages, family connections, and a repeated pattern in the family line. In Enoch’s case, one statement is repeated twice, and his ending is described with different words.
Students will be able to retell Genesis 5:18–24 in order and identify that the passage highlights Enoch’s action, that he walked with God, and the outcome, that God took him.
Welcome: Spot the repeated words
5 minBegin by telling the children they will hear a very short Bible account with an unusual repeated line. Read Genesis 5:18–24 slowly. Ask them to listen for the name Enoch and for the sentence that is said twice about him. Write that sentence where everyone can see it.
Genesis 5:18, Genesis 5:21, Genesis 5:22, Genesis 5:24
Read and explain: Put the account in order
8 minRead the verses again and help the class build the sequence. Jared became Enoch’s father. Enoch became Methuselah’s father at sixty-five. After Methuselah’s birth, Enoch walked with God for three hundred years and had more sons and daughters. Then the passage says all Enoch’s days were three hundred sixty-five years, and God took him.
Genesis 5:18, Genesis 5:21, Genesis 5:22, Genesis 5:23, Genesis 5:24
Discuss: Name the action and the outcome
6 minShow that Jared’s record ends with 'then he died'. Enoch’s record does not use that wording. Instead, the passage repeats Enoch’s action, 'Enoch walked with God', and gives the outcome, 'he was not found, for God took him'. Encourage children to answer using those exact words from the verses.
Genesis 5:20, Genesis 5:22, Genesis 5:24
Make and respond: Sequence cards strip
7 minGive children simple cards to draw or label with key moments from the verses: Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, walked with God, more sons and daughters, three hundred sixty-five years, God took him. As they arrange the cards, ask them to tell the account in order using Bible wording where possible.
Genesis 5:18, Genesis 5:21, Genesis 5:22, Genesis 5:23, Genesis 5:24
Closing: Repeat the line the passage repeats
4 minFinish by reading Genesis 5:22 and Genesis 5:24 aloud. Invite the group to say together, 'Enoch walked with God.' Then ask, 'What action is repeated about Enoch, and what outcome is stated at the end?' Close by reminding them that these repeated words are the main emphasis of the passage.
Genesis 5:22, Genesis 5:24
Questions to explore

Look for the same sentence in Genesis 5:22 and Genesis 5:24.
Genesis 5:22, Genesis 5:24
How is the ending of Jared’s record different from the ending of Enoch’s record?
Compare the final words about Jared with the final words about Enoch and answer using the wording of the verses.
Genesis 5:20, Genesis 5:24
When does the passage say Enoch walked with God, and for how long?
The timing is given after Methuselah’s birth, and the length of time is stated clearly in one verse.

Enoch Sequence Cards
What you’ll need
- plain paper or card
- pencils or textas
- scissors
- Bible
Try it together
- Make six to seven simple cards with words or drawings from the passage, such as Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, walked with God, more sons and daughters, 365 years, God took him.
- Read Genesis 5:18–24 aloud and ask the children to place the cards in the order the verses give.
- Let each child retell the account by pointing to the cards and using phrases from the passage.
- Finish by circling or holding up the card 'walked with God' and asking what action and outcome the passage gives about Enoch.
The cards help children follow the sequence of Genesis 5:18–24 and notice that the repeated focus in the passage is that Enoch walked with God, and that God took him at the end of the account.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, prepare the cards in advance with simple drawings and have them place only four main events in order.
- For older children, ask them to compare the wording about Jared and Enoch and underline the exact phrases that are different.
An optional closing prayer
Suggested prayer: 'God, thank you for your word. Please help us listen carefully to Scripture and remember what it says about Enoch walking with you.'
