Galatians 3: Faith and Belief
Galatians 3:1–9; Galatians 3:10–14; Galatians 3:15–25; Galatians 3:26–29
Galatians 3 asks how people receive God’s Spirit, blessing and family identity. These four short sessions help children follow Paul’s argument step by step through faith, Christ’s redeeming work, the purpose of the law, and belonging to God’s family.
Before you teach
Across Galatians 3, Paul questions the Galatians about receiving the Spirit, points to Abraham’s belief, contrasts the law with faith, explains that Christ redeemed from the curse, and says believers are children of God and heirs according to promise through Christ Jesus.
Students will be able to name the main point in each part of Galatians 3 and explain from the verses that Paul connects God’s promise, the Spirit and belonging to God’s family with faith in Christ Jesus.
Your lesson sequence
Use the teaching outline below for each session, with these reading and activity choices.
Faith and Abraham
Galatians 3:1–9
Paul asks how the Spirit was received and points to Abraham’s belief.
Try together: Read the passage, find the repeated words about faith, and explain how Abraham fits Paul’s argument.
Christ has redeemed us
Galatians 3:10–14
Paul contrasts the curse connected with the law and Christ’s redeeming work that brings blessing.
Try together: Read the verses in order and list what each verse says about curse, Christ and blessing.
The purpose of the law
Galatians 3:15–25
Paul says the promise was not cancelled and explains that the law became a tutor to bring us to Christ.
Try together: Read the passage, sort the words promise, law, faith and tutor, and retell Paul’s point using the verses.
Children through faith in Christ
Galatians 3:26–29
Paul says believers are children of God through faith in Christ Jesus and heirs according to promise.
Try together: Read the verses and make a list of what this passage says about belonging to Christ and God’s family.
Welcome: Session word and anchor verse
4 minStart each session by reading one anchor verse and one key word aloud. Session 1: “hearing of faith” from Galatians 3:2. Session 2: “redeemed” from Galatians 3:13. Session 3: “tutor” from Galatians 3:24. Session 4: “children of God” from Galatians 3:26. Ask children to listen for that idea in the reading.

Questions to explore
In Galatians 3:2 and Galatians 3:5, what are the two ways Paul sets side by side when he asks about receiving the Spirit?
Read both verses and repeat the exact two phrases Paul uses in each question.
Galatians 3:2, Galatians 3:5
How do Galatians 3:10, Galatians 3:13 and Galatians 3:14 move from curse to Christ to blessing?
Take the verses one at a time and name the main word or action in each.
Galatians 3:10, Galatians 3:13, Galatians 3:14
According to Galatians 3:24, Galatians 3:26 and Galatians 3:29, what does Paul say about the law, faith and people who belong to Christ?
Look for one statement about the tutor, one about children of God, and one about heirs according to promise.

Galatians 3 Reminder Card
What you’ll need
- paper or thin card
- pencils
- markers or crayons
- scissors
- Bible
Try it together
- Read the session passage and choose one of the suggested key verses.
- Cut or fold a small card.
- Write the verse reference and a short phrase from the verse on the front.
- On the back, write one simple sentence about what that verse teaches in this session.
- Take turns reading the cards aloud.
The card keeps children close to one exact verse and helps them state Paul’s teaching from that part of Galatians 3.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, pre-write the verse reference and let them copy only a short phrase such as “believed God” or “children of God”.
- For older children, ask them to add a second supporting verse from the same session and explain how the two verses connect.
An optional closing prayer
“God, help us listen carefully to your word and understand what Galatians 3 says about faith in Christ Jesus. Amen.”

Galatians 3
1 Foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you not to obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly portrayed among you as crucified?
2 I just want to learn this from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith?
3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now completed in the flesh?
4 Did you suffer so many things in vain, if it is indeed in vain?
5 He therefore who supplies the Spirit to you and does miracles among you, does he do it by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith?
6 Even so, Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness.”
7 Know therefore that those who are of faith are children of Abraham.
8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the Good News beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you all the nations will be blessed.”
9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham.
10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who doesn’t continue in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them.”
11 Now that no man is justified by the law before God is evident, for, “The righteous will live by faith.”
12 The law is not of faith, but, “The man who does them will live by them.”
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,”
14 that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
15 Brothers, speaking of human terms, though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been confirmed, no one makes it void or adds to it.
16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his offspring. He doesn’t say, “To descendants”, as of many, but as of one, “To your offspring”, which is Christ.
17 Now I say this: A covenant confirmed beforehand by God in Christ, the law, which came four hundred thirty years after, does not annul, so as to make the promise of no effect.
18 For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no more of promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by promise.
19 Then why is there the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise has been made. It was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator.
20 Now a mediator is not between one, but God is one.
21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could make alive, most certainly righteousness would have been of the law.
22 But the Scripture imprisoned all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, confined for the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
24 So that the law has become our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
26 For you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 If you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring and heirs according to promise.
