God's Promise to David

2 Samuel 7:1–17; 1 Chronicles 17:1–15

In this lesson, children hear how David wanted to build a house for God, but God gave a different answer through Nathan. They will sequence the account, notice the choices and outcomes, and trace God’s promise about David’s house, kingdom, and throne.

Before you teach

The passage opens with David living in his house and speaking to Nathan about the ark being in a tent. Nathan first tells David to go ahead, but that same night God gives Nathan another message. God reminds David what he has done, explains that he had not asked for a cedar house, and makes a promise about David’s offspring and kingdom.

Learning aim

Students will be able to retell the passage in order and explain that God corrected David’s plan, promised David a lasting house, kingdom, and throne, and said David’s offspring would build the house for his name.

1

Welcome: Two kinds of house

4 min

Explain that the word house is used in two ways in this passage. David lives in a cedar house, while the ark is in a tent. Later, God says he will make David a house, and the passage explains this as David’s house, kingdom, and throne being established forever, not a building project for David to complete.

2

Read and explain: David’s idea is corrected

8 min

Read the opening verses aloud. David notices the difference between his cedar house and the tent for the ark. Nathan first tells David to do what is in his heart, but that same night God speaks to Nathan with a different message. God says David is not to build him a house and adds that he had never asked Israel’s leaders, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’

3

Discuss: What God had already done

6 min

Help the children list what God says he has already done. He took David from the sheep pen to be prince over Israel, was with him wherever he went, and cut off his enemies. God also speaks about appointing a place for his people and giving rest or subduing enemies. The passage keeps turning attention back to God’s work.

4

Make and respond: Sequence the promise

8 min

Children make simple sequence cards and place them in order: David notices the tent, Nathan’s first answer, God’s word that night, God’s reminder of what he has done, God’s promise about David’s offspring, and Nathan reporting everything to David. As they work, point out the outcome: Nathan’s first answer is corrected by God’s later word.

2 Samuel 7:2, 2 Samuel 7:3, 2 Samuel 7:4, 2 Samuel 7:8, 2 Samuel 7:12, 2 Samuel 7:13, 2 Samuel 7:17, 1 Chronicles 17:2, 1 Chronicles 17:3, 1 Chronicles 17:11, 1 Chronicles 17:12, 1 Chronicles 17:15

5

Closing: A lasting promise with loving discipline

4 min

Finish by reading God’s promise that David’s house, kingdom, and throne will be established forever. Also include the line that if David’s offspring commits iniquity, God will chasten him, yet his loving kindness will not depart as it did from Saul. This helps children see both God’s fatherly discipline and his continuing kindness in the passage.

2 Samuel 7:13, 2 Samuel 7:14, 2 Samuel 7:15, 2 Samuel 7:16, 1 Chronicles 17:12, 1 Chronicles 17:13, 1 Chronicles 17:14

Questions to explore

What did David notice that made him speak to Nathan?

Look for the contrast between David’s cedar house and the ark being in a tent.

2 Samuel 7:2, 1 Chronicles 17:1

How did Nathan’s first answer change, and when did it change?

Read Nathan’s first reply, then notice that same night God gave Nathan a different word to report.

2 Samuel 7:3, 2 Samuel 7:4, 1 Chronicles 17:2, 1 Chronicles 17:3

What does God say about David’s offspring, both about building and about discipline?

Find the verses that say the offspring will build a house for God’s name, and the verse that says God would chasten him if he commits iniquity.

2 Samuel 7:13, 2 Samuel 7:14, 1 Chronicles 17:12, 1 Chronicles 17:13

Promise Sequence Cards

What you’ll need

  • paper or card
  • pencils or textas
  • scissors
  • Bible

Try it together

  1. Write or draw six moments from the passage on separate cards: David’s house, the ark in a tent, Nathan’s first answer, God speaking that night, God’s promise about David’s offspring, Nathan telling David.
  2. Mix the cards and let the children work in pairs to place them in the correct order.
  3. Read the matching verses after each card is placed to check the sequence.
  4. Ask the children to mark cards about David’s idea with one symbol and cards about God’s promise with another symbol.

This activity helps children follow the account in order and distinguish between David’s plan, Nathan’s first response, and God’s words in the passage.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, prepare the cards in advance with simple pictures so they can focus on ordering and retelling.
  • For older or more confident children, ask them to add a short phrase from the passage to each card, such as tent, house, offspring, kingdom, throne, or loving kindness.

An optional closing prayer

You may pray: “God, thank you for speaking clearly to David through Nathan. Please help us listen carefully to your words and remember that you are faithful in what you say.”

2 Samuel 7

1 When the king lived in his house, and Yahweh had given him rest from all his enemies all around,

2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but God’s ark dwells within curtains.”

3 Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for Yahweh is with you.”

4 That same night, Yahweh’s word came to Nathan, saying,

5 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Yahweh says, “Should you build me a house for me to dwell in?

6 For I have not lived in a house since the day that I brought the children of Israel up out of Egypt, even to this day, but have moved around in a tent and in a tabernacle.

7 In all places in which I have walked with all the children of Israel, did I say a word to anyone from the tribes of Israel whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’ ” ’

8 Now therefore tell my servant David this: ‘Yahweh of Armies says, “I took you from the sheep pen, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people, over Israel.

9 I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you. I will make you a great name, like the name of the great ones who are on the earth.

10 I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place and be moved no more. The children of wickedness will not afflict them any more, as at the first,

11 and as from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. I will cause you to rest from all your enemies. Moreover Yahweh tells you that Yahweh will make you a house.

12 When your days are fulfilled and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up your offspring after you, who will proceed out of your body, and I will establish his kingdom.

13 He will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

14 I will be his father, and he will be my son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the children of men;

15 but my loving kindness will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before you.

16 Your house and your kingdom will be made sure forever before you. Your throne will be established forever.” ’ ”

17 Nathan spoke to David all these words, and according to all this vision.

1 Chronicles 17

1 When David was living in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I live in a cedar house, but the ark of Yahweh’s covenant is in a tent.”

2 Nathan said to David, “Do all that is in your heart; for God is with you.”

3 That same night, the word of God came to Nathan, saying,

4 “Go and tell David my servant, ‘Yahweh says, “You shall not build me a house to dwell in;

5 for I have not lived in a house since the day that I brought up Israel to this day, but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tent to another.

6 In all places in which I have walked with all Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’ ” ’

7 “Now therefore, you shall tell my servant David, ‘Yahweh of Armies says, “I took you from the sheep pen, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel.

8 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you. I will make you a name like the name of the great ones who are on the earth.

9 I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more. The children of wickedness will not waste them any more, as at the first,

10 and from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover I tell you that Yahweh will build you a house.

11 It will happen, when your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up your offspring after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom.

12 He will build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever.

13 I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will not take my loving kindness away from him, as I took it from him who was before you;

14 but I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom forever. His throne will be established forever.” ’ ”

15 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
