Isaiah 12: Joyful Thanksgiving
Isaiah 12:1–6
Isaiah 12:1–6 is a short song of thanks that looks ahead to a day when people will praise Yahweh. It moves from personal gratitude to public proclamation, showing joy, trust, and worship centred on God’s salvation.
Before you teach
This passage is written as prophecy and teaching. Repeated words such as “In that day” introduce what will be said, and the whole passage speaks about giving thanks, trusting instead of fearing, and making Yahweh’s great name known among peoples and throughout the earth.
Explain the central teaching of Isaiah 12: Joyful Thanksgiving, using two details from the reading. Isaiah 12 teaches that when God saves and comforts, his people respond with trust, joy, thanksgiving, and public praise.
Welcome: Isaiah 12: Joyful Thanksgiving
5 minIntroduce “Joyful Thanksgiving” and locate Isaiah 12:1–6. Isaiah 12 teaches that when God saves and comforts, his people respond with trust, joy, thanksgiving, and public praise. Invite each learner to name a detail or question they will listen for.
Isaiah 12:1, Isaiah 12:4, Isaiah 12:6
Read and explain the passage
12 minThe passage begins with a first-person response: “I will give thanks to you, Yahweh”. The reason is clear in the verse itself. Yahweh had been angry, but that anger “has turned away” and he now comforts. The focus is not on explaining the earlier anger, but on thankful praise for comfort received.
Verse 3 uses a picture: drawing water “out of the wells of salvation”. Water is presented as something drawn with joy, so salvation is described as a rich and life-giving source. Isaiah does not turn this into a story here. It remains a vivid image that teaches joyful participation in God’s saving provision.
The closing verses call for singing, crying aloud, and shouting. Yahweh has “done excellent things”, and this should be known “in all the earth”. The final reason for loud joy is God’s presence and greatness: “the Holy One of Israel is great among you”. Worship grows from who he is and what he has done.
Read the selected verses together, pausing at “Joyful Thanksgiving”. Use the source reading below and check the explanation against the words of the passage.

Isaiah 12:2
How far should praise of Yahweh spread in verses 4–6?
