Before you teach

This passage speaks repeatedly about “that day” and focuses on Zion and Jerusalem. It begins with disgrace in human relationships, then turns to “Yahweh’s branch”, the survivors of Israel, cleansing from filth and blood, and finally the Lord’s protective presence over Mount Zion and its assemblies.

Learning aim

Explain the central teaching of Isaiah 4: A Remnant in Zion, using two details from the reading. Isaiah 4:1–6 teaches that after shame and judgment, the Lord will make a holy remnant and give cleansing, glory, and shelter in Zion.

Read and explain the passage

12 min

The passage opens with a picture of deep reproach. Seven women appeal to one man, saying they will provide their own bread and clothing if only they may bear his name. The focus is not on romance but on shame and the desire for reproach to be removed.

Isaiah then describes the people who remain. The one left in Zion and remaining in Jerusalem “shall be called holy”. This is not said about everyone without distinction, but about those left, those who remain, and those “written among the living in Jerusalem”. Holiness here belongs to this preserved group.

The Lord will wash away filth and purge blood from Jerusalem by “the spirit of justice” and “the spirit of burning”. After this cleansing, Yahweh will create cloud, smoke, and flaming fire over Mount Zion and its assemblies, with a canopy, shade, refuge, and shelter. The passage ends with God’s protective care over his people.
