Israel Faces Arad

Numbers 21:1–3

In this brief account, Arad attacks Israel and takes captives. Israel then makes a vow to Yahweh, and the passage records Yahweh’s response and a severe outcome. Students will trace the sequence carefully and discuss what the text says about human choices and Yahweh’s action.

Before you teach

Numbers 21:1–3 presents a short wartime account. The Canaanite king of Arad hears that Israel has come by the way of Atharim, fights against Israel, and takes some captives. Israel vows a vow to Yahweh. Yahweh listens to Israel’s voice, delivers up the Canaanites, and the place is called Hormah.

Learning aim

Students will be able to sequence Numbers 21:1–3 and identify the attack, Israel’s conditional vow, Yahweh’s response, and the stated outcome.

1

Welcome: Prepare to read a sober short account

5 min

Introduce the passage as a very short Bible account about conflict, a vow, and an outcome. Explain that students will observe the wording closely and avoid adding extra details. Ask them to listen for four parts: the attack, the vow, Yahweh’s response, and the final result named in the passage.

Numbers 21:1, Numbers 21:2, Numbers 21:3

2

Read and explain: Trace the sequence of the verses

10 min

Read all three verses aloud. In verse 1, the king of Arad hears about Israel, fights against Israel, and takes some of them captive. In verse 2, Israel vows a vow to Yahweh, a serious spoken commitment, and states a condition: if Yahweh delivers this people into Israel’s hand. In verse 3, Yahweh listens to Israel’s voice and delivers up the Canaanites.

Numbers 21:1, Numbers 21:2, Numbers 21:3

3

Discuss: Choices named in the passage

8 min

List the choices and actions in order from the text. Arad fought against Israel and took captives. Israel responded by making a conditional vow to Yahweh. Yahweh listened to Israel’s voice and delivered up the Canaanites. Then Israel utterly destroyed them and their cities. Keep discussion tied to the wording of each verse and the sequence given.

Numbers 21:1, Numbers 21:2, Numbers 21:3

4

Observe and respond: Sequence and wording chart

10 min

Students work individually or in small groups to make a four-line observation chart: attack, vow, Yahweh’s response, outcome and place name. They should write a short phrase from each verse or a close paraphrase, including that some were taken captive, that Israel vowed, that Yahweh listened, and that they utterly destroyed them and their cities. Finish by noting the name Hormah.

Numbers 21:1, Numbers 21:2, Numbers 21:3

5

Closing: Summarise the passage carefully

7 min

Invite students to give a one-minute summary using all the major details of the passage. Conclude by restating that this text records both Yahweh listening to Israel and the severe outcome that followed. Encourage students to distinguish between what the passage directly says and any further questions it does not answer here.

Questions to explore

What actions of the king of Arad are named before Israel speaks to Yahweh?

Stay with Numbers 21:1 and identify each step named there: he heard, fought against Israel, and took some of them captive.

Numbers 21:1

What exactly did Israel vow to Yahweh, and how is the vow conditional?

Use Numbers 21:2 closely. Notice the words 'If you will indeed deliver this people into my hand' before Israel states what it will do.

Numbers 21:2

What does Numbers 21:3 say first about Yahweh’s response, and what does it then say about Israel’s action and the place name?

Separate the parts of the verse carefully: Yahweh 'listened' and 'delivered up the Canaanites'; then 'they utterly destroyed them and their cities'; then 'the name of the place was called Hormah'.

What you’ll need

  • paper
  • pens or pencils
  • Bible text

Try it together

  1. Divide a page into four sections labelled Attack, Vow, Yahweh’s Response, and Outcome and Place Name.
  2. Read Numbers 21:1–3 again and write a short phrase in each section using the wording of the passage as closely as possible.
  3. Underline the conditional part of Israel’s vow in the second section.
  4. Compare charts in pairs and check that each one includes captives, the vow, Yahweh listening, the utter destruction of them and their cities, and Hormah.

This task keeps students focused on the sequence, choices, and outcomes stated in Numbers 21:1–3 without turning the warfare account into a playful activity.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger teens, provide the four section headings in advance and let them fill in key words from each verse.
  • For older students, ask them to add a final line distinguishing direct observation from interpretation, using only details found in Numbers 21:1–3.

An optional closing prayer

Suggested prayer: “Yahweh, help us read your word carefully, speak truthfully about what it says, and respond with humility as we learn from this passage. Amen.”
