Jacob's Final Blessings and His Family's Farewell
Genesis 47:27–48:22; Genesis 49:29–50:14
Jacob’s last days bring important words and careful actions. In this lesson, children trace what Jacob asked for, how he blessed Joseph’s sons, and how his family honoured his wishes after he died.
Before you teach
These verses begin with Israel’s family living in Goshen and growing in Egypt. Jacob knows he is nearing death, speaks with Joseph, blesses Ephraim and Manasseh, gives burial instructions to all his sons, and then Joseph leads a large mourning journey to bury Jacob in Canaan before returning to Egypt.
Students will be able to put the passage in order and explain two choices people made in the story and the outcomes that followed.
Welcome: What did Jacob ask for?
5 minShow children the title and explain that this lesson follows Jacob’s final days. Ask them to listen for requests, blessings and actions. Briefly point out that Jacob, also called Israel, had lived seventeen years in Egypt and asked Joseph to swear not to bury him there, but to carry him to his family burial place. [Evidence: Genesis 47:28, Genesis 47:29, Genesis 47:30, Genesis 47:31]

Read and explain: Jacob blesses Joseph’s sons
8 minRead Genesis 48:1-20 aloud in sections. Explain that Joseph brought Manasseh and Ephraim to Jacob, and Jacob said God had blessed him and promised offspring and land. Jacob counted Joseph’s two sons as his own for inheritance. Then, although Joseph placed Manasseh first, Jacob knowingly put his right hand on Ephraim, the younger, and set Ephraim before Manasseh in the blessing. [Evidence: Genesis 48:1, Genesis 48:3, Genesis 48:4, Genesis 48:5, Genesis 48:13, Genesis 48:14, Genesis 48:19, Genesis 48:20]

Discuss: Final instructions and what happened next
6 minRead selected verses about Jacob’s burial instructions and death. Help children notice that Jacob clearly named the cave in Canaan where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah and Leah were buried. After Jacob died, Joseph wept, Egypt mourned, Pharaoh allowed the journey, and Jacob’s sons did what he had commanded. [Evidence: Genesis 49:29, Genesis 49:30, Genesis 49:31, Genesis 49:33, Genesis 50:1, Genesis 50:3, Genesis 50:6, Genesis 50:12, Genesis 50:13]

Make and respond: Story sequence cards
7 minGive children simple cards to arrange in order: family grows in Goshen, Jacob asks Joseph to bury him in Canaan, Joseph brings Manasseh and Ephraim, Jacob blesses Ephraim before Manasseh, Jacob gives burial instructions, Jacob dies, the family buries him in Canaan, Joseph returns to Egypt. As they order the cards, ask what choices people made and what followed. [Evidence: Genesis 47:27, Genesis 47:29, Genesis 48:1, Genesis 48:14, Genesis 49:29, Genesis 49:33, Genesis 50:13, Genesis 50:14]

Closing: What does this passage show?
4 minReview the account in order. Emphasise that Jacob spoke about God’s blessing and said God would be with Joseph and bring him again to the land of his fathers. Also note the family’s response: Joseph swore, Pharaoh permitted the burial journey, and Jacob’s sons carried out his command. Invite children to say one true thing they learned from the passage. Questions to explore
What did Jacob ask Joseph to promise before Jacob died?
Look at Jacob’s words in Egypt and notice both the place he did not want and the place where he wanted to be buried. [Evidence: Genesis 47:29, Genesis 47:30, Genesis 47:31]
Genesis 47:29, Genesis 47:30, Genesis 47:31
How did Jacob’s blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh differ from Joseph’s arrangement?
Compare where Joseph placed the boys with where Jacob placed his right hand, and notice Jacob’s explanation about the younger brother. [Evidence: Genesis 48:13, Genesis 48:14, Genesis 48:18, Genesis 48:19, Genesis 48:20]

Jacob’s Farewell Sequence Cards
What you’ll need
- plain paper or card
- pencils or textas
- scissors
- Bible
Try it together
- Write or draw eight moments from the passage on separate cards.
- Read the verses again and work together to place the cards in order.
- Ask children to match each card with a verse that supports it.
- Invite each child to choose one card and tell what choice was made and what happened next.
This activity helps children trace the order of the passage and see how Jacob, Joseph and Jacob’s sons acted in response to important final words.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, use six larger picture cards and retell each step with short repeated phrases such as 'Jacob asked', 'Jacob blessed', and 'They buried Jacob'.
- For older children, ask them to add verse references to each sequence card and explain why Jacob’s blessing of Ephraim stands out in the passage.
An optional closing prayer
You may pray: 'God, thank you for showing us these last words and actions of Jacob’s family. Please help us listen carefully to your word and remember what we learned today.'

Genesis 47
27 Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they got themselves possessions therein, and were fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly.
28 Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were one hundred forty-seven years.
29 The time came near that Israel must die, and he called his son Joseph, and said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me. Please don’t bury me in Egypt,
30 but when I sleep with my fathers, you shall carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burying place.” Joseph said, “I will do as you have said.”
31 Israel said, “Swear to me,” and he swore to him. Then Israel bowed himself on the bed’s head.
Genesis 48
1 After these things, someone said to Joseph, “Behold, your father is sick.” He took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.
2 Someone told Jacob, and said, “Behold, your son Joseph comes to you,” and Israel strengthened himself, and sat on the bed.
3 Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me,
4 and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful, and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your offspring after you for an everlasting possession.’
5 Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you into Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh, even as Reuben and Simeon, will be mine.
6 Your offspring, whom you become the father of after them, will be yours. They will be called after the name of their brothers in their inheritance.
7 As for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died beside me in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance to come to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (also called Bethlehem).”
8 Israel saw Joseph’s sons, and said, “Who are these?”
9 Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” He said, “Please bring them to me, and I will bless them.”
10 Now the eyes of Israel were dim for age, so that he couldn’t see well. Joseph brought them near to him; and he kissed them, and embraced them.
11 Israel said to Joseph, “I didn’t think I would see your face, and behold, God has let me see your offspring also.”
12 Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.
13 Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near to him.
14 Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it on Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the firstborn.
15 He blessed Joseph, and said, “The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has fed me all my life long to this day,
16 the angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads, and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac. Let them grow into a multitude upon the earth.”
17 When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him. He held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.
18 Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this is the firstborn. Put your right hand on his head.”
19 His father refused, and said, “I know, my son, I know. He also will become a people, and he also will be great. However, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his offspring will become a multitude of nations.”
20 He blessed them that day, saying, “Israel will bless in your name, saying, ‘God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh’ ” He set Ephraim before Manasseh.
21 Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am dying, but God will be with you, and bring you again to the land of your fathers.
22 Moreover I have given to you one portion above your brothers, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.”
Genesis 49
29 He instructed them, and said to them, “I am to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,
30 in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite as a burial place.
31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah, his wife. There they buried Isaac and Rebekah, his wife, and there I buried Leah:
32 the field and the cave that is therein, which was purchased from the children of Heth.”
33 When Jacob finished charging his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, breathed his last breath, and was gathered to his people.
Genesis 50
1 Joseph fell on his father’s face, wept on him, and kissed him.
2 Joseph commanded his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father; and the physicians embalmed Israel.
3 Forty days were used for him, for that is how many days it takes to embalm. The Egyptians wept for Israel for seventy days.
4 When the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to Pharaoh’s staff, saying, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,
5 ‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am dying. Bury me in my grave which I have dug for myself in the land of Canaan.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come again.’ ”
6 Pharaoh said, “Go up, and bury your father, just like he made you swear.”
7 Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, all the elders of the land of Egypt,
8 all the house of Joseph, his brothers, and his father’s house. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.
9 Both chariots and horsemen went up with him. It was a very great company.
10 They came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and there they lamented with a very great and severe lamentation. He mourned for his father seven days.
11 When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians.” Therefore its name was called Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.
12 His sons did to him just as he commanded them,
13 for his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field, as a possession for a burial site, from Ephron the Hittite, near Mamre.
14 Joseph returned into Egypt—he, and his brothers, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.
