Single lesson
Jesus Clears the Temple in John's Early Account
John 2:12–25
In this lesson, children trace John’s early account of Jesus in Jerusalem, notice what Jesus does in the temple, and explore why his words about the temple were understood more clearly later.
Before you teach
John 2:12–25 begins after Jesus stays a few days in Capernaum with his mother, brothers and disciples. As the Passover of the Jews approaches, Jesus goes up to Jerusalem. There, John records Jesus’ actions in the temple, the challenge from others, and the response of both the disciples and the crowds.
Students will be able to put John 2:12–25 in order and explain that Jesus called the temple his Father’s house, spoke about the temple of his body, and knows what is in people.
Welcome: Where does this account begin?
5 minBegin by locating the first steps in the passage. Read that Jesus went to Capernaum with his mother, brothers and disciples, and they stayed a few days. Then the Passover of the Jews was near, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Ask children to listen for place changes and who is with Jesus.
John 2:12, John 2:13
Read and explain: Jesus clears the temple
8 minRead verses 14–17 slowly. Children can list what Jesus found in the temple: sellers of oxen, sheep and doves, and money changers sitting there. Explain that Jesus drove out the sheep and oxen, poured out money, overturned tables, and told the dove sellers to take these things away because this was his Father’s house, not a marketplace.
John 2:14, John 2:15, John 2:16, John 2:17
Discuss: The question and Jesus’ answer
7 minRead the question asked of Jesus: what sign do you show us? Then read Jesus’ answer about destroying this temple and raising it in three days. Help children notice that the people thought he meant the building, but John explains that Jesus spoke about the temple of his body. Later, after he was raised from the dead, the disciples remembered and believed.
John 2:18, John 2:19, John 2:20, John 2:21, John 2:22
Make and respond: Put the account in order
6 minChildren make simple sequence cards for key moments: Capernaum, Jerusalem, sellers in the temple, tables overturned, Jesus’ words about his Father’s house, the question about a sign, and the disciples remembering later. As they order the cards, ask them to match each card to a verse and say what happened first, next, and later.
John 2:12, John 2:13, John 2:16, John 2:18, John 2:22
Closing: Belief, signs and what Jesus knows
4 minFinish with verses 23–25. Many believed in Jesus’ name when they saw his signs during the feast. Yet Jesus did not entrust himself to them, because he knew everyone and knew what was in people. Invite children to name one thing this passage shows about Jesus and one part they can now place in order.
John 2:23, John 2:24, John 2:25
Questions to explore
What did Jesus say the temple was, and what did he say it should not become?
Look closely at Jesus’ words to the dove sellers and repeat his description of the temple and the marketplace.
John 2:16
Why did the people misunderstand Jesus’ words about the temple?
Compare what Jesus said with the reply about the temple taking forty-six years to build, then read John’s explanation.
John 2:19, John 2:20, John 2:21
When did the disciples understand Jesus’ temple saying more clearly?
Find the verse that says what happened later and what the disciples remembered and believed.
John 2:22

Temple Account Sequence Cards
What you’ll need
- plain paper or card
- pencils or textas
- Bible
- scissors
Try it together
- Write or draw seven moments from the passage on separate cards: Capernaum, Jerusalem, sellers in the temple, animals driven out, tables overturned, Jesus speaks about the temple, disciples remember later.
- Read John 2:12–25 together and place the cards in order on the floor or table.
- Ask children to add the matching verse reference to each card.
- Invite each child to choose one card and explain that moment in their own words from the passage.
This activity helps children follow the order of John 2:12–25 and notice how the account moves from Jesus’ actions in the temple to later understanding by the disciples.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, reduce the sequence to four cards and use simple drawings instead of written summaries.
- For older or confident readers, ask them to sort the cards under two headings: what people saw straight away and what was understood later.
An optional closing prayer
You may pray: "Father, thank you for this passage about Jesus. Please help us remember his words, understand what we read, and honour you as we learn."

John 2
12 After this, he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, his brothers, and his disciples; and they stayed there a few days.
13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
14 He found in the temple those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, and the changers of money sitting.
15 He made a whip of cords and drove all out of the temple, both the sheep and the oxen; and he poured out the changers’ money and overthrew their tables.
16 To those who sold the doves, he said, “Take these things out of here! Don’t make my Father’s house a marketplace!”
17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will eat me up.”
18 The Jews therefore answered him, “What sign do you show us, seeing that you do these things?”
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
20 The Jews therefore said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple! Will you raise it up in three days?”
21 But he spoke of the temple of his body.
22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.
23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in his name, observing his signs which he did.
24 But Jesus didn’t entrust himself to them, because he knew everyone,
25 and because he didn’t need for anyone to testify concerning man; for he himself knew what was in man.
