Jesus Heals Two Blind Men and a Man Who Cannot Speak

Matthew 9:27–34

In this lesson, children trace two linked healing moments in Matthew 9:27–34. They will follow the order of the account, notice what different people say and do, and consider what the passage shows about Jesus and human responses.

6–10 years30 minutes

Before you teach

This passage follows Jesus as two blind men call out to him and come into a house where he speaks with them. After their eyes are opened, another man who cannot speak is brought to Jesus. The crowd and the Pharisees respond very differently to what happens.

Learning aim

Students will be able to retell the sequence of Matthew 9:27–34 and name at least two different responses to Jesus in the passage.

1

Welcome: Listen for the order of the story

5 min

Begin by introducing today’s account as two connected moments. Tell the group to listen for who comes to Jesus, what Jesus asks, what happens next, and how people respond at the end. Explain that the words ‘Have mercy on us’ are the blind men’s appeal for Jesus to help them. Read the passage aloud slowly.

Matthew 9:27, Matthew 9:28, Matthew 9:33, Matthew 9:34

2

Read and explain: The two blind men come to Jesus

7 min

Retell the first part in order. Two blind men follow Jesus and call him ‘son of David’. In the house, Jesus asks, ‘Do you believe that I am able to do this?’ They answer, ‘Yes, Lord.’ Jesus touches their eyes and says, ‘According to your faith be it done to you.’ Then their eyes are opened.

Matthew 9:27, Matthew 9:28, Matthew 9:29, Matthew 9:30

3

Discuss: What choices and outcomes do we see?

6 min

Talk about the choices in the passage. The blind men choose to call out, follow Jesus, come into the house, and answer his question. Jesus speaks, touches their eyes, and commands them not to tell others. Yet they spread his fame. Then a mute man is brought to Jesus, and after the demon is cast out, he speaks.

Matthew 9:27, Matthew 9:28, Matthew 9:30, Matthew 9:31, Matthew 9:32, Matthew 9:33

4

Make and respond: Story sequence cards

8 min

Children make simple sequence cards showing the events in order: the blind men call out, Jesus asks a question, Jesus touches their eyes, their eyes are opened, they spread his fame, a mute man is brought, the man speaks, the crowd marvels, and the Pharisees accuse. Use the cards to retell the passage with a partner.

Matthew 9:27, Matthew 9:28, Matthew 9:29, Matthew 9:30, Matthew 9:31, Matthew 9:32, Matthew 9:33, Matthew 9:34

5

Closing: Notice the different responses to Jesus

4 min

Finish by comparing the ending responses. The multitudes marvel and say that nothing like this has been seen in Israel. The Pharisees speak against Jesus and say he casts out demons by the prince of the demons. Ask children to summarise the story in order and name one thing the passage shows about Jesus, such as his power to heal and cast out demons.

Matthew 9:33, Matthew 9:34

Questions to explore

What did the two blind men say to Jesus, and what does that show they wanted from him?

Use their exact words in Matthew 9:27 and notice that they asked for mercy, which shows they were seeking his help.

Matthew 9:27

What question did Jesus ask the blind men before he touched their eyes?

Read Matthew 9:28 carefully and listen for Jesus’ question about whether they believed he was able to do this.

Matthew 9:28

How are the crowd’s words different from the Pharisees’ words at the end of the passage?

Compare Matthew 9:33 and Matthew 9:34 to see that one response is amazement and the other is accusation.

Healing Story Sequence Cards

What you’ll need

  • plain paper or card
  • pencils or textas
  • scissors
  • Bible

Try it together

  1. Read Matthew 9:27–34 together and list the main events in order.
  2. Have children draw one event on each small card.
  3. Mix the cards and ask children to place them back in order using the Bible for help.
  4. Invite pairs to retell the story using their ordered cards.
  5. Finish by asking which responses to Jesus they noticed in the last two cards.

This activity helps children follow the sequence of Matthew 9:27–34 and notice the choices, outcomes, and different responses to Jesus in the passage.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, prepare the event list verbally and let them draw only four key moments: calling out, Jesus’ question, eyes opened, mute man speaks.
  • For older or more confident children, ask them to add speech bubbles with exact words from Matthew 9:27, Matthew 9:28, Matthew 9:33, and Matthew 9:34.

An optional closing prayer

You may pray: ‘Lord Jesus, thank you for your mercy and power shown in this passage. Please help us listen carefully to your words and respond to you truthfully.’
