Single lesson
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane and Is Arrested
Matthew 26:36–56; Mark 14:32–52; Luke 22:39–53; John 18:1–14
Jesus goes with his disciples to pray, warns them to pray, and is then arrested. In this lesson, children trace the account carefully and notice what Jesus says and what other people do.
Before you teach
In these Gospel accounts, Jesus goes to Gethsemane, the Mount of Olives, or a garden with his disciples. He tells the disciples to pray, and in Matthew and Mark he takes Peter, James and John further with him. Judas then comes with people sent to seize Jesus, a sword is used, Jesus stops that response, and he is taken.
Students will be able to name five main parts of the account and explain from the text that Jesus prayed, submitted to the Father, told his disciples to pray, and did not answer arrest with violence.
Welcome: Listen for the main parts
5 minTell the children they are listening for the order of the passage. Start with the opening scene: Jesus comes with his disciples to Gethsemane or the Mount of Olives. He tells the disciples to sit while he prays, and tells them to pray. In Matthew and Mark, he then takes Peter, James and John further with him.
Matthew 26:36, Matthew 26:37, Mark 14:32, Mark 14:33, Luke 22:39, Luke 22:40
Read and explain: Jesus prays to the Father
7 minRead the prayer verses aloud. Explain that Jesus is sorrowful, troubled, and in agony. He speaks about the cup and asks the Father, yet he also says that the Father's will should be done. Help children notice that the passage shows deep distress and willing submission together in Jesus' prayer.
Matthew 26:37, Matthew 26:38, Matthew 26:39, Matthew 26:42, Mark 14:33, Mark 14:36, Luke 22:42, Luke 22:44
Discuss: The disciples sleep and Jesus warns them
6 minShow the contrast in the passage. Jesus keeps praying, but the disciples are found sleeping. Jesus tells them to watch and pray so they do not enter into temptation. Luke says they were sleeping because of grief. Ask the children to repeat what Jesus wanted his disciples to do.
Matthew 26:40, Matthew 26:41, Matthew 26:43, Mark 14:37, Mark 14:38, Luke 22:45, Luke 22:46
Make and respond: Sequence cards from shared details
8 minGive children five cards to make: Jesus goes to pray, Jesus prays, disciples sleep, Judas arrives with people to seize Jesus, Jesus is taken. Explain that all four Gospels tell these shared parts, while some Gospels add extra details such as a kiss, Jesus' words to the crowd, or the sword and ear. Do not fix one exact combined order for those extra details.
Matthew 26:36, Matthew 26:39, Matthew 26:40, Matthew 26:47, Matthew 26:50, Mark 14:32, Mark 14:37, Mark 14:43, Mark 14:46, Luke 22:41, Luke 22:45, Luke 22:47, John 18:1, John 18:4, John 18:12
Closing: What do we learn about Jesus and people?
4 minReview the five parts together. Ask children for one observation about Jesus and one about the other people in the passage. Summarise from the text: Jesus knew what was happening, prayed, and accepted the Father's will. Others slept, betrayed him, used a sword, or fled. End with an optional short prayer.
John 18:4, Matthew 26:39, Luke 22:42, Luke 22:48, Matthew 26:56, Mark 14:50, John 18:11
Questions to explore
What words in Jesus' prayer show that he submitted to the Father's will?
Look for the lines where Jesus speaks about the cup and then says that the Father's will or desire should be done.
Matthew 26:39, Matthew 26:42, Luke 22:42, John 18:11
What did Jesus tell the disciples to do when he found them sleeping?
Read the verses where Jesus finds them asleep and repeats the instruction to watch and pray so they would not enter into temptation.
Matthew 26:40, Matthew 26:41, Mark 14:37, Mark 14:38, Luke 22:46
How does Jesus respond when a sword is used?
Find the verses where the servant's ear is cut off and notice that Jesus tells the disciple to stop, and in Luke he heals the ear.
Matthew 26:51, Matthew 26:52, Luke 22:50, Luke 22:51, John 18:10, John 18:11

Five Shared Sequence Cards
What you’ll need
- plain paper or card
- pencils or markers
- scissors
- Bible for reading aloud
Try it together
- Help children list five shared parts of the account: Jesus goes to pray, Jesus prays, disciples sleep, Judas arrives with people to seize Jesus, Jesus is taken.
- Have children draw one simple picture or write one short label on each card.
- Mix the cards and ask children to place them back in order while retelling the account from the verses.
- Reread key verses together and let children check whether each card matches what the text says.
This activity helps children follow the main flow all four accounts share, while also noticing that each Gospel includes its own details.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, write the five event labels for them and let them focus on drawing and ordering the cards.
- For older children, ask them to add one short quotation or phrase from a verse to each card, such as 'watch and pray' or 'your will be done'.
An optional closing prayer
You may pray: 'Father, thank you for Jesus. Please help us learn from his prayer, his obedience, and his words in this passage. Help us to pray and listen to you.'

Matthew 26
36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go there and pray.”
37 He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and severely troubled.
38 Then Jesus said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with me.”
39 He went forward a little, fell on his face, and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not what I desire, but what you desire.”
40 He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What, couldn’t you watch with me for one hour?
41 Watch and pray, that you don’t enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 Again, a second time he went away and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cup can’t pass away from me unless I drink it, your desire be done.”
43 He came again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
44 He left them again, went away, and prayed a third time, saying the same words.
45 Then he came to his disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
46 Arise, let’s be going. Behold, he who betrays me is at hand.”
47 While he was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48 Now he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, “Whoever I kiss, he is the one. Seize him.”
49 Immediately he came to Jesus, and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.
50 Jesus said to him, “Friend, why are you here?” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.
51 Behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place, for all those who take the sword will die by the sword.
53 Or do you think that I couldn’t ask my Father, and he would even now send me more than twelve legions of angels?
54 How then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that it must be so?”
55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to seize me? I sat daily in the temple teaching, and you didn’t arrest me.
56 But all this has happened that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.
Mark 14
32 They came to a place which was named Gethsemane. He said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
33 He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be greatly troubled and distressed.
34 He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.”
35 He went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him.
36 He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Please remove this cup from me. However, not what I desire, but what you desire.”
37 He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you watch one hour?
38 Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39 Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.
40 Again he returned and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they didn’t know what to answer him.
41 He came the third time and said to them, “Sleep on now, and take your rest. It is enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
42 Arise! Let’s get going. Behold, he who betrays me is at hand.”
43 Immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came—and with him a multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.
44 Now he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I will kiss, that is he. Seize him, and lead him away safely.”
45 When he had come, immediately he came to him and said, “Rabbi! Rabbi!” and kissed him.
46 They laid their hands on him and seized him.
47 But a certain one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
48 Jesus answered them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me?
49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you didn’t arrest me. But this is so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled.”
50 They all left him, and fled.
51 A certain young man followed him, having a linen cloth thrown around himself over his naked body. The young men grabbed him,
52 but he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.
Luke 22
39 He came out and went, as his custom was, to the Mount of Olives. His disciples also followed him.
40 When he was at the place, he said to them, “Pray that you don’t enter into temptation.”
41 He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and he knelt down and prayed,
42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
43 An angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.
44 Being in agony, he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.
45 When he rose up from his prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief,
46 and said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
47 While he was still speaking, a crowd appeared. He who was called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He came near to Jesus to kiss him.
48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said to him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”
50 A certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered, “Let me at least do this” —and he touched his ear and healed him.
52 Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and elders, who had come against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?
53 When I was with you in the temple daily, you didn’t stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
John 18
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.
2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.
3 Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
4 Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were happening to him, went out and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”
5 They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
6 When therefore he said to them, “I am he,” they went backward and fell to the ground.
7 Again therefore he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,”
9 that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, “Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none.”
10 Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 Jesus therefore said to Peter, “Put the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not surely drink it?”
12 So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and bound him,
13 and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14 Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should perish for the people.
