Jesus Speaks about His Coming Death

John 12:20–50

Jesus speaks about his coming death, the purpose of his words, and the choice people face. This lesson helps children trace the passage in order and respond to Jesus’ call to believe, follow, and walk in the light.

Before you teach

In John 12:20–50, some Greeks ask to see Jesus. Jesus then says the time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified, speaks about death, fruit, light, belief, and the Father who sent him, and the passage also shows different responses from the crowd and leaders.

Learning aim

Students will be able to describe how Jesus speaks about his coming death and explain two responses he calls for: following him and believing in the light.

1

Welcome: Why does this conversation begin?

4 min

Start by telling the group that this passage begins when some Greeks want to see Jesus. Instead of giving a simple meeting scene, the passage moves straight into Jesus explaining that an important time has arrived. Ask children to listen for what Jesus says about glory, death, light, and belief.

John 12:20, John 12:21, John 12:22, John 12:23

2

Read and explain: A picture of fruit and a call to follow

8 min

Read John 12:23–28. Jesus says the time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. He uses the picture of a grain of wheat: if it dies, it bears much fruit. Later the passage explains that Jesus is speaking about the kind of death he will die. Jesus also says that serving him means following him, even as he speaks honestly about being troubled.

John 12:23, John 12:24, John 12:26, John 12:27, John 12:28, John 12:33

3

Discuss: The voice, being lifted up, and the crowd’s question

6 min

Read John 12:29–36. Some people think the sound from heaven is thunder, while others say an angel has spoken. Jesus says the voice is for their sake. He then speaks about judgment, the prince of this world being cast out, and being lifted up from the earth, which points to his death. When the crowd asks about the Son of Man, Jesus answers by telling them to walk and believe while the light is with them.

John 12:29, John 12:30, John 12:31, John 12:32, John 12:33, John 12:34, John 12:35, John 12:36

4

Make and respond: Believe in the light, do not hide

7 min

Read John 12:37–43 before making the reminder cards. Explain simply that many still did not believe, even after many signs, and John includes words from Isaiah about eyes, hearts, and healing. Also notice that some rulers believed but would not say so openly because they feared people and loved people’s praise more than God’s praise. Children then choose a short line from the passage such as ‘Follow me’, ‘Walk while you have the light’, or ‘Believe in the light’ and make a card with one matching action for this week, such as listening carefully to Jesus’ words or not hiding that they belong to him.

John 12:37, John 12:38, John 12:39, John 12:40, John 12:41, John 12:42, John 12:43, John 12:26, John 12:35, John 12:36

5

Closing: Jesus’ words come from the Father

5 min

Finish with John 12:44–50. Jesus says that believing in him is tied to believing the one who sent him, and seeing him is tied to seeing the one who sent him. He says he came as light into the world and came to save the world. He also says his words matter because the Father gave him what to say, and the Father’s commandment is eternal life.

Questions to explore

What does Jesus want people to understand from the picture of the grain of wheat?

Notice that Jesus speaks about a grain dying and bearing much fruit, and later the passage explains that being lifted up points to the kind of death he would die.

John 12:24, John 12:33

How do people react to the voice from heaven, and what does Jesus say about it?

Compare the crowd’s different ideas about what they heard with Jesus’ explanation that the voice came for their sake.

John 12:29, John 12:30

Why did some rulers stay quiet about believing in Jesus?

Look for the fear they had and what the passage says they loved more than God’s praise.

John 12:42, John 12:43

Walk in the Light Reminder Card

What you’ll need

  • paper or card
  • pencils or pens
  • crayons or coloured pencils
  • Bible

Try it together

  1. Read John 12:26, John 12:35, John 12:36, John 12:42 and John 12:43 together.
  2. Ask each child to choose one short line or clear idea from the passage for a reminder card.
  3. Have them draw a matching picture, such as a path, a light, or footsteps, and write one action like 'listen to Jesus’ words' or 'do not hide that I follow Jesus'.
  4. Invite each child to show the card and explain how it connects to the passage.

The card links directly to Jesus’ call to follow him, believe in the light, and care more about God’s praise than people’s praise.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, give two or three verse choices and let them copy a short phrase such as 'Follow me' or 'Believe in the light'.
  • For older or more confident children, ask them to add one sentence explaining how their chosen line connects with Jesus speaking about his coming death.

An optional closing prayer

Suggested prayer: 'Father, thank you for sending Jesus. Please help us listen to his words, believe in the light, and follow him without hiding. Amen.'

John 12

20 Now there were certain Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast.

21 Therefore, these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.”

22 Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn, Andrew came with Philip, and they told Jesus.

23 Jesus answered them, “The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

24 Most certainly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.

25 He who loves his life will lose it. He who hates his life in this world will keep it to eternal life.

26 If anyone serves me, let him follow me. Where I am, there my servant will also be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

27 “Now my soul is troubled. What shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this time’? But I came to this time for this cause.

28 Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came out of the sky, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”

29 Therefore the multitude who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”

30 Jesus answered, “This voice hasn’t come for my sake, but for your sakes.

31 Now is the judgment of this world. Now the prince of this world will be cast out.

32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”

33 But he said this, signifying by what kind of death he should die.

34 The multitude answered him, “We have heard out of the law that the Christ remains forever. How do you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’ ? Who is this Son of Man?”

35 Jesus therefore said to them, “Yet a little while the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, that darkness doesn’t overtake you. He who walks in the darkness doesn’t know where he is going.

36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become children of light.” Jesus said these things, and he departed and hid himself from them.

37 But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they didn’t believe in him,

38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: “Lord, who has believed our report? To whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

39 For this cause they couldn’t believe, for Isaiah said again:

40 “He has blinded their eyes and he hardened their heart, lest they should see with their eyes, and perceive with their heart, and would turn, and I would heal them.”

41 Isaiah said these things when he saw his glory, and spoke of him.

42 Nevertheless, even many of the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they didn’t confess it, so that they wouldn’t be put out of the synagogue,

43 for they loved men’s praise more than God’s praise.

44 Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me, but in him who sent me.

45 He who sees me sees him who sent me.

46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in the darkness.

47 If anyone listens to my sayings and doesn’t believe, I don’t judge him. For I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

48 He who rejects me, and doesn’t receive my sayings, has one who judges him. The word that I spoke will judge him in the last day.

49 For I spoke not from myself, but the Father who sent me gave me a commandment, what I should say and what I should speak.

50 I know that his commandment is eternal life. The things therefore which I speak, even as the Father has said to me, so I speak.”
