Before you teach

These verses are Job’s direct answer to Yahweh in a wisdom and dialogue passage. Job echoes Yahweh’s words in verses 3 and 4, then admits that he has spoken without understanding. He contrasts hearing with seeing, and his reply ends with repentance in dust and ashes.

2

Read and explain the passage

12 min

The passage opens simply: Job answered Yahweh. That matters because these words are a direct response to the LORD. The speech is personal and shaped by what Yahweh has already said, so we read it as Job’s reply, not as a general saying.

Job recalls Yahweh’s question about hiding counsel without knowledge. Then he admits that he spoke about what he did not understand. He calls these things too wonderful for him, meaning beyond his grasp. The focus is on Job’s limited knowledge, not on defending himself.

Job repeats Yahweh’s call to listen and answer. Then he says, “I had heard of you”, but now, “my eye sees you.” Because of this, he says, “Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” His repentance follows this changed awareness of the LORD.

1 Then Job answered Yahweh:

2 “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be restrained.

3 You asked, ‘Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?’ therefore I have uttered that which I didn’t understand, things too wonderful for me, which I didn’t know.

4 You said, ‘Listen, now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you will answer me.’

5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you.
