Joseph Reveals Who He Is

Genesis 45:1–28

In this lesson, children trace the moment Joseph tells his brothers who he is, hear his kind words, and follow the message sent to Jacob. They will sequence the events and notice how God’s care is spoken about in the chapter.

Before you teach

Genesis 45:1–28 tells what Joseph said and did when he finally made himself known to his brothers in Egypt. The passage focuses on Joseph’s words, his brothers’ response, Pharaoh’s welcome, and Jacob’s change from disbelief to renewed hope when he heard Joseph’s message and saw the wagons.

Learning aim

Students will be able to retell the main events of Genesis 45:1–28 in order and explain that Joseph said God used these events to preserve life.

1

Welcome: What happened first?

4 min

Briefly introduce today’s passage and say that the class will listen for the order of events. Show five blank spaces on a board or table for a simple sequence: Joseph reveals himself, Joseph explains, Pharaoh helps, brothers return, Jacob believes. Ask children to listen carefully for who speaks and what changes in the family.

Genesis 45:3, Genesis 45:5, Genesis 45:17, Genesis 45:25, Genesis 45:27

2

Read and explain: Joseph tells the truth

8 min

Read Genesis 45:1–8 aloud. Explain that Joseph sent everyone else out before speaking to his brothers, then said, “I am Joseph”. Notice their fear, Joseph’s reminder that they had sold him into Egypt, and Joseph’s repeated statement that God sent him ahead to preserve life during famine. Clarify that famine means a time without enough food from the land.

Genesis 45:1, Genesis 45:3, Genesis 45:4, Genesis 45:5, Genesis 45:6, Genesis 45:7, Genesis 45:8

3

Discuss: What did Joseph choose to do?

6 min

Talk about Joseph’s next words and actions. He told his brothers to hurry to Jacob, invited the family to Goshen, and promised to provide for them while the famine continued. He wept with Benjamin, kissed all his brothers, and then they talked with him. Ask children what these actions show about Joseph’s choices in this passage.

Genesis 45:9, Genesis 45:10, Genesis 45:11, Genesis 45:14, Genesis 45:15

4

Make and respond: Sequence cards

8 min

Give children five small cards. They draw or write one scene on each card: Joseph reveals himself, Joseph sends a message, Pharaoh sends wagons, brothers travel to Jacob, Jacob sees the wagons. Children place the cards in order and retell the chapter to a partner using key words from the passage such as alive, famine, wagons, and come.

Genesis 45:3, Genesis 45:9, Genesis 45:19, Genesis 45:25, Genesis 45:27, Genesis 45:28

5

Closing: Jacob hears and believes

4 min

Read Genesis 45:25–28 again. Point out the change in Jacob: first he did not believe, then he heard Joseph’s words and saw the wagons, and his spirit revived. Finish by reviewing the sequence together and asking each child to say one true thing this passage teaches about Joseph, Jacob, or God’s care.

Genesis 45:26, Genesis 45:27, Genesis 45:28

Questions to explore

Why were Joseph’s brothers terrified when he said, “I am Joseph”?

Use Joseph’s own words in the passage to connect their fear with the fact that he was the brother they had sold into Egypt.

Genesis 45:3, Genesis 45:4

What reason did Joseph give for telling his brothers not to be grieved or angry with themselves?

Look for the repeated words about what God did and the purpose of preserving life during the famine.

Genesis 45:5, Genesis 45:7, Genesis 45:8

What helped Jacob move from disbelief to renewed hope?

Notice both what he heard and what he saw before his spirit revived.

Joseph Story Sequence Cards

What you’ll need

  • 5 small cards or paper squares per child
  • pencils or crayons
  • Bible
  • optional envelope or paperclip

Try it together

  1. Read the main events from the passage together.
  2. Children draw or label one event on each card.
  3. Help them place the cards in order from Genesis 45:1 to Genesis 45:28.
  4. Pairs retell the story using their cards and one sentence for each scene.
  5. Store the cards in an envelope or clip them together to take home.

This activity helps children sequence the account and remember the choices, words, and outcomes described in Genesis 45:1–28.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, prepare the five event titles for them to match with simple drawings instead of writing full labels.
  • For older or more confident children, ask them to add a short caption with Joseph’s words about God preserving life from Genesis 45:5 or Genesis 45:7.

An optional closing prayer

“Dear God, thank you for caring for Joseph’s family in this passage. Please help us listen carefully to your word and choose words and actions that bring peace. Amen.”

Genesis 45

1 Then Joseph couldn’t control himself before all those who stood before him, and he called out, “Cause everyone to go out from me!” No one else stood with him, while Joseph made himself known to his brothers.

2 He wept aloud. The Egyptians heard, and the house of Pharaoh heard.

3 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Does my father still live?” His brothers couldn’t answer him; for they were terrified at his presence.

4 Joseph said to his brothers, “Come near to me, please.” They came near. He said, “I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into Egypt.

5 Now don’t be grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.

6 For these two years the famine has been in the land, and there are yet five years, in which there will be no plowing and no harvest.

7 God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on the earth, and to save you alive by a great deliverance.

8 So now it wasn’t you who sent me here, but God, and he has made me a father to Pharaoh, lord of all his house, and ruler over all the land of Egypt.

9 Hurry, and go up to my father, and tell him, ‘This is what your son Joseph says, “God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me. Don’t wait.

10 You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you will be near to me, you, your children, your children’s children, your flocks, your herds, and all that you have.

11 There I will provide for you; for there are yet five years of famine; lest you come to poverty, you, and your household, and all that you have.” ’

12 Behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaks to you.

13 You shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that you have seen. You shall hurry and bring my father down here.”

14 He fell on his brother Benjamin’s neck and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck.

15 He kissed all his brothers, and wept on them. After that his brothers talked with him.

16 The report of it was heard in Pharaoh’s house, saying, “Joseph’s brothers have come.” It pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants.

17 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Tell your brothers, ‘Do this: Load your animals, and go, travel to the land of Canaan.

18 Take your father and your households, and come to me, and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and you will eat the fat of the land.’

19 Now you are commanded to do this: Take wagons out of the land of Egypt for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come.

20 Also, don’t concern yourselves about your belongings, for the good of all the land of Egypt is yours.”

21 The sons of Israel did so. Joseph gave them wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way.

22 He gave each one of them changes of clothing, but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver and five changes of clothing.

23 He sent the following to his father: ten donkeys loaded with the good things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and provision for his father by the way.

24 So he sent his brothers away, and they departed. He said to them, “See that you don’t quarrel on the way.”

25 They went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan, to Jacob their father.

26 They told him, saying, “Joseph is still alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt.” His heart fainted, for he didn’t believe them.

27 They told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said to them. When he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob, their father, revived.

28 Israel said, “It is enough. Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”
