Plans for the Tabernacle and Its Furnishings

Exodus 25:1–27:21; Exodus 30:1–38

Yahweh gave Moses detailed instructions for Israel’s sanctuary, furniture, and holy service. In this lesson, children will see who first received the words, how the covenant shapes the whole passage, and how these instructions organised Israel’s worship before Yahweh.

6–10 years30 minutes

Before you teach

Yahweh speaks to Moses and tells him to speak to the children of Israel, who are to bring a willing offering. The sanctuary is made so Yahweh may dwell among them. The covenant is placed in the ark, the veil stands before the covenant, and later instructions cover lamps, incense, census atonement money, washing, anointing oil, and holy incense.

Learning aim

Students will be able to identify Moses as the first receiver of these instructions, the children of Israel as the people Moses must address and who bring the offering, and explain that these instructions organise Israel’s worship around the covenant Yahweh gives.

1

Welcome: Who speaks, who hears, who responds?

5 min

Ask children to listen for three groups in the opening verses. Read Exodus 25:1-2 aloud. Explain that Yahweh is speaking, Moses first receives the words, and Moses must speak to the children of Israel. They are the ones asked to bring the offering, and it is taken from those whose hearts are willing.

Exodus 25:1, Exodus 25:2

2

Read and explain: Sanctuary and covenant setting

7 min

Read Exodus 25:8-9, 25:16, 25:21, 25:22, and 26:33. Explain that the sanctuary is made so Yahweh may dwell among them. The covenant Yahweh will give is placed in the ark, and the veil stands before the covenant. So these instructions belong to Israel’s worship around Yahweh’s covenant and meeting place.

Exodus 25:8, Exodus 25:9, Exodus 25:16, Exodus 25:21, Exodus 25:22, Exodus 26:33

3

Discuss the layout: Furniture, places, and order

6 min

Briefly trace the passage in order. The ark and mercy seat come first, then the table with bread of the presence, then the lamp stand giving light, then the veil that separates the holy place from the most holy, and then the altar and court. Show that the passage gives careful placement and repeated patterns, not random choices.

Exodus 25:17, Exodus 25:30, Exodus 25:37, Exodus 25:40, Exodus 26:33, Exodus 26:35, Exodus 27:1, Exodus 27:9

4

Make and respond: Add the later instructions

8 min

Children make an annotated context chart with two columns: Place and Service. After adding sanctuary items, include later instructions from Exodus 30: incense before the veil, equal atonement money when counted, washing before entering or ministering, holy anointing oil, and holy incense before the covenant. This helps children trace the whole passage more evenly.

Exodus 30:6, Exodus 30:12, Exodus 30:15, Exodus 30:16, Exodus 30:20, Exodus 30:25, Exodus 30:36

5

Closing: Holiness, service, and careful limits

4 min

Finish by reading short parts of the later instructions. Point out that lamps are kept in order, incense is offered morning and evening, the counted people give the same half shekel, washing is required before service, and the oil and incense are holy. Ask children to name one rule and what part of worship it belongs to.

Exodus 27:21, Exodus 30:7, Exodus 30:8, Exodus 30:13, Exodus 30:15, Exodus 30:20, Exodus 30:31, Exodus 30:37

Questions to explore

According to the opening verses, who first hears these instructions, and who is meant to bring the offering?

Read Exodus 25:1 and Exodus 25:2 carefully. Yahweh speaks to Moses, and Moses is told to speak to the children of Israel, who bring the willing offering.

Exodus 25:1, Exodus 25:2

How does the passage show that these instructions belong to Israel’s worship around the covenant?

Look for where the covenant is placed and where the veil stands. Exodus 25:16 and Exodus 25:21 place the covenant in the ark, while Exodus 26:33 and Exodus 30:6 mention the veil and the covenant together.

Exodus 25:16, Exodus 25:21, Exodus 26:33, Exodus 30:6

What does the census money instruction say counted Israelites must give, and what is it used for?

Use the exact details: each counted man from twenty years old and upward gives the same half shekel, and the money is appointed for the service of the Tent of Meeting as a memorial before Yahweh.

Exodus 30:13, Exodus 30:14, Exodus 30:15, Exodus 30:16

Annotated Tabernacle and Service Chart

What you’ll need

  • plain paper or cardboard
  • pencils
  • coloured pencils or markers
  • ruler
  • Bible passage text

Try it together

  1. Draw two headings on the page: Place and Service.
  2. Under Place, add labels such as sanctuary, ark, table, lamp stand, veil, altar, court, basin, and incense altar.
  3. Under Service, add short notes from the passage such as dwell among them, meet with you, burn continually, half shekel, wash, holy anointing oil, and holy incense.
  4. Use arrows or colours to connect each service note to the right place or object.
  5. Share the chart and explain how it shows both the covenant setting and the ordered worship in the passage.

This activity helps children see that the passage gives both physical plans and ongoing instructions for worship around the covenant, the Tent of Meeting, and Yahweh’s holy service.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, prepare the headings and main labels first, then let them match short verse phrases to each label as you read them aloud.
  • For older or more confident children, ask them to sort every note under one of three ideas: covenant, place, or service, using only words from the passage.

An optional closing prayer

You may pray: “Lord God, thank you for speaking to Moses and giving Israel clear instructions. Please help us read carefully, understand what this passage says about your holy worship, and respond with respect.”

Exodus 25

1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

2 “Speak to the children of Israel, that they take an offering for me. From everyone whose heart makes him willing you shall take my offering.

4 blue, purple, scarlet, fine linen, goats’ hair,

5 rams’ skins dyed red, sea cow hides, acacia wood,

6 oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil and for the sweet incense,

7 onyx stones, and stones to be set for the ephod and for the breastplate.

20 The cherubim shall spread out their wings upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings, with their faces toward one another. The faces of the cherubim shall be toward the mercy seat.

21 You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the covenant that I will give you.

22 There I will meet with you, and I will tell you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are on the ark of the covenant, all that I command you for the children of Israel.

23 “You shall make a table of acacia wood. Its length shall be two cubits, and its width a cubit, and its height one and a half cubits.

24 You shall overlay it with pure gold, and make a gold molding around it.

26 You shall make four rings of gold for it, and put the rings in the four corners that are on its four feet.

27 The rings shall be close to the rim, for places for the poles to carry the table.

28 You shall make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold, that the table may be carried with them.

29 You shall make its dishes, its spoons, its ladles, and its bowls with which to pour out offerings. You shall make them of pure gold.

30 You shall set bread of the presence on the table before me always.

31 “You shall make a lamp stand of pure gold. The lamp stand shall be made of hammered work. Its base, its shaft, its cups, its buds, and its flowers shall be of one piece with it.

32 There shall be six branches going out of its sides: three branches of the lamp stand out of its one side, and three branches of the lamp stand out of its other side;

33 three cups made like almond blossoms in one branch, a bud and a flower; and three cups made like almond blossoms in the other branch, a bud and a flower, so for the six branches going out of the lamp stand;

Exodus 30

1 “You shall make an altar to burn incense on. You shall make it of acacia wood.

2 Its length shall be a cubit, and its width a cubit. It shall be square, and its height shall be two cubits. Its horns shall be of one piece with it.

3 You shall overlay it with pure gold, its top, its sides around it, and its horns; and you shall make a gold molding around it.

6 You shall put it before the veil that is by the ark of the covenant, before the mercy seat that is over the covenant, where I will meet with you.

7 Aaron shall burn incense of sweet spices on it every morning. When he tends the lamps, he shall burn it.

8 When Aaron lights the lamps at evening, he shall burn it, a perpetual incense before Yahweh throughout your generations.

9 You shall offer no strange incense on it, nor burnt offering, nor meal offering; and you shall pour no drink offering on it.

10 Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once in the year; with the blood of the sin offering of atonement once in the year he shall make atonement for it throughout your generations. It is most holy to Yahweh.”

11 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

12 “When you take a census of the children of Israel, according to those who are counted among them, then each man shall give a ransom for his soul to Yahweh when you count them, that there be no plague among them when you count them.

13 They shall give this, everyone who passes over to those who are counted, half a shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty gerahs); half a shekel for an offering to Yahweh.

14 Everyone who passes over to those who are counted, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the offering to Yahweh.

15 The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less, than the half shekel, when they give the offering of Yahweh, to make atonement for your souls.

16 You shall take the atonement money from the children of Israel, and shall appoint it for the service of the Tent of Meeting; that it may be a memorial for the children of Israel before Yahweh, to make atonement for your souls.”

17 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

18 “You shall also make a basin of bronze, and its base of bronze, in which to wash. You shall put it between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and you shall put water in it.

19 Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet in it.

20 When they go into the Tent of Meeting, they shall wash with water, that they don’t die; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn an offering made by fire to Yahweh.

21 So they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they not die. This shall be a statute forever to them, even to him and to his descendants throughout their generations.”

22 Moreover Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

23 “Also take fine spices: of liquid myrrh, five hundred shekels; and of fragrant cinnamon half as much, even two hundred and fifty; and of fragrant cane, two hundred and fifty;

24 and of cassia five hundred, according to the shekel of the sanctuary; and a hin of olive oil.

25 You shall make it into a holy anointing oil, a perfume compounded after the art of the perfumer: it shall be a holy anointing oil.

26 You shall use it to anoint the Tent of Meeting, the ark of the covenant,

27 the table and all its articles, the lamp stand and its accessories, the altar of incense,

28 the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the basin with its base.

29 You shall sanctify them, that they may be most holy. Whatever touches them shall be holy.

30 You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and sanctify them, that they may minister to me in the priest’s office.

31 You shall speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to me throughout your generations.

32 It shall not be poured on man’s flesh, and do not make any like it, according to its composition. It is holy. It shall be holy to you.

33 Whoever compounds any like it, or whoever puts any of it on a stranger, he shall be cut off from his people.’ ”

34 Yahweh said to Moses, “Take to yourself sweet spices, gum resin, onycha, and galbanum: sweet spices with pure frankincense. There shall be an equal weight of each.

35 You shall make incense of it, a perfume after the art of the perfumer, seasoned with salt, pure and holy.

36 You shall beat some of it very small, and put some of it before the covenant in the Tent of Meeting, where I will meet with you. It shall be to you most holy.

37 You shall not make this incense, according to its composition, for yourselves: it shall be to you holy for Yahweh.

38 Whoever shall make any like that, to smell of it, he shall be cut off from his people.”
