Proverbs 1: The Beginning of Knowledge
Proverbs 1:1–7; Proverbs 1:8–19; Proverbs 1:20–33
Proverbs 1 introduces the purpose of Proverbs, warns against joining sinful companions, and presents Wisdom calling in public. In this lesson, children will compare these voices and identify the central teaching that shapes the whole chapter.
Before you teach
This passage opens the proverbs of Solomon and explains their purpose: wisdom, instruction, understanding, righteousness, justice, equity, prudence, learning, and counsel. It then places three voices side by side: parents who teach, sinners who entice, and Wisdom who calls people to listen and turn.
Students will be able to name the main teaching of Proverbs 1: the fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge, and listening to wise instruction leads away from destructive paths.
Welcome: What kind of words help us live wisely?
5 minBegin by telling the group that Proverbs 1 says why these sayings were written. Read Proverbs 1:2–7 aloud. Ask children to listen for the words wisdom, instruction, understanding, knowledge, and counsel. Explain that verse 7 gives the key teaching for this passage: “The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge”, while fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:2, Proverbs 1:3, Proverbs 1:4, Proverbs 1:5, Proverbs 1:6, Proverbs 1:7
Read and explain: Two invitations in Proverbs 1
7 minRead Proverbs 1:8–19, then Proverbs 1:20–23. Parents give instruction and teaching that are pictured as beautiful honour. Sinners invite a son to share violent gain, and he is told not to consent or walk with them. Wisdom also calls publicly and tells people to turn at her reproof.
Proverbs 1:8, Proverbs 1:9, Proverbs 1:10, Proverbs 1:14, Proverbs 1:15, Proverbs 1:19, Proverbs 1:20, Proverbs 1:21, Proverbs 1:23
Discuss: What happens when people refuse wisdom?
6 minRead Proverbs 1:24–33. Help the children notice that the passage repeats refusal, ignoring counsel, and despising reproof. Then notice the result: people face the fruit of their own way. Contrast that with verse 33, where the one who listens will dwell securely and be at ease, without fear of harm. Keep the discussion anchored in the wording of this proverb.
Proverbs 1:24, Proverbs 1:25, Proverbs 1:29, Proverbs 1:30, Proverbs 1:31, Proverbs 1:32, Proverbs 1:33
Make and respond: Reminder card for a wise choice
8 minChildren choose one key verse or short phrase from the passage, such as Proverbs 1:7, Proverbs 1:10, or Proverbs 1:33, and make a small reminder card. Ask them to add one realistic situation, such as being urged to join in wrong behaviour or needing to listen to correction. Remind them that the card is an application activity, while the Bible text itself gives the wisdom teaching.
Proverbs 1:7, Proverbs 1:10, Proverbs 1:23, Proverbs 1:33
Closing: Say the central teaching together
4 minFinish by reviewing the chapter’s sequence in this passage: father and mother’s instruction, sinners’ enticement, and Wisdom’s call. Ask the group to say together, “The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge.” Encourage them to remember that Proverbs 1 teaches them to refuse sinful invitation and to listen carefully to wisdom.

Questions to explore
According to Proverbs 1:2–7, what are these proverbs meant to give or teach?
Look back through the list of words in the opening verses, especially wisdom, instruction, understanding, prudence, knowledge, and counsel, and then notice the summary in verse 7.
Proverbs 1:2, Proverbs 1:3, Proverbs 1:4, Proverbs 1:5, Proverbs 1:6, Proverbs 1:7
What are the sinners offering in Proverbs 1:11–14, and why does the passage say not to join them?
Notice both their plan and their promised reward, then compare that with the warning about evil, bloodshed, and greed in verses 15–19.
Proverbs 1:11, Proverbs 1:12, Proverbs 1:13, Proverbs 1:14, Proverbs 1:15, Proverbs 1:16, Proverbs 1:19
What different outcomes appear for those who refuse Wisdom and those who listen to her?
Compare the words about refusal and disaster in verses 24–32 with the promise given to the listener in verse 33.
Proverbs 1:24, Proverbs 1:25, Proverbs 1:26, Proverbs 1:27, Proverbs 1:28, Proverbs 1:31, Proverbs 1:32, Proverbs 1:33

Wise Choice Reminder Card
What you’ll need
- plain paper or card
- pencils or pens
- coloured pencils or markers
- Bible
Try it together
- Read Proverbs 1:7, Proverbs 1:10, Proverbs 1:23, and Proverbs 1:33, and let each child choose one verse or short phrase.
- Fold or cut paper into a small card and write the chosen words neatly on the front.
- On the back, write or draw one realistic situation where that verse could help with a wise choice.
- Decorate the card with simple symbols from the passage such as an ear for listening or a path for choosing a way.
- Invite children to share how their card connects to the passage.
This activity helps children remember that Proverbs 1 contrasts different voices and calls them to listen to wisdom instead of joining harmful paths.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, offer two verse choices only, and let them draw their situation instead of writing a full sentence.
- For older or stronger readers, ask them to compare all three voices in the chapter and add a short sentence explaining which voice matches Proverbs 1:7 most closely.
An optional closing prayer
You may pray: “Yahweh, please help us listen to wise instruction, refuse wrong paths, and choose the fear of Yahweh, which is the beginning of knowledge. Amen.”

Proverbs 1
1 The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel:
2 to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding;
3 to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity;
4 to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young man—
5 that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel;
6 to understand a proverb and parables, the words and riddles of the wise.
7 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge, but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.
8 My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching;
9 for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck.
10 My son, if sinners entice you, don’t consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us. Let’s lie in wait for blood. Let’s lurk secretly for the innocent without cause.
12 Let’s swallow them up alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down into the pit.
13 We’ll find all valuable wealth. We’ll fill our houses with plunder.
14 You shall cast your lot among us. We’ll all have one purse”—
15 my son, don’t walk on the path with them. Keep your foot from their path,
16 for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood.
17 For the net is spread in vain in the sight of any bird;
18 but these lay in wait for their own blood. They lurk secretly for their own lives.
19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners.
20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street. She utters her voice in the public squares.
21 She calls at the head of noisy places. At the entrance of the city gates, she utters her words:
22 “How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?
23 Turn at my reproof. Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you. I will make known my words to you.
24 Because I have called, and you have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one has paid attention;
25 but you have ignored all my counsel, and wanted none of my reproof;
26 I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you,
27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come on you.
28 Then they will call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me,
29 because they hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of Yahweh.
30 They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof.
31 Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes.
32 For the backsliding of the simple will kill them. The careless ease of fools will destroy them.
33 But whoever listens to me will dwell securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm.”
