Proverbs 3: The Blessings of Wisdom

Proverbs 3:13–35

Proverbs 3:13–35 teaches that wisdom is more valuable than riches and shapes everyday choices. This lesson helps children trace the passage from wisdom’s blessings to practical neighbourly actions and the final contrasts between different ways of living.

Before you teach

In this part of Proverbs 3, wisdom is described as precious, life-giving and peaceful. The passage then points to Yahweh’s wisdom in creation, urges the learner to keep wisdom and discretion in view, and closes with commands about neighbours plus strong contrasts between violent, upright, wicked, humble, wise and foolish ways.

Learning aim

Students will be able to name two blessings linked with wisdom in Proverbs 3:13–35 and compare one wise way with one harmful way from the passage.

1

Welcome: Wisdom worth more than treasure

5 min

Ask children what people often think is valuable. Then read Proverbs 3:13–18 aloud and listen for what wisdom is compared with. Point out that wisdom is better than silver, gold and rubies. Also notice the picture in Proverbs 3:16: wisdom is shown with length of days in one hand and riches and honour in the other. Her ways are pleasant and peaceful.

2

Read and explain: Wisdom in Yahweh’s world

7 min

Read Proverbs 3:19–26. Explain that the passage connects wisdom with Yahweh himself. It says Yahweh founded the earth by wisdom and established the heavens by understanding. Then it tells the learner to keep sound wisdom and discretion in view, because wisdom brings life, steadiness, sweet sleep and confidence in Yahweh instead of fear.

3

Discuss: Wise choices with neighbours

6 min

Read Proverbs 3:27–30 slowly. Help children identify the clear actions in these verses: do good when you can, do not delay help, do not plan evil against a neighbour, and do not start a fight without cause. Emphasise that wisdom in Proverbs is not only ideas. It appears in everyday treatment of other people.

Proverbs 3:27, Proverbs 3:28, Proverbs 3:29, Proverbs 3:30

4

Make and respond: Compare two ways to live

8 min

Read Proverbs 3:31–35. Discuss the contrasts in these verses: do not envy the violent person or choose his ways, because Yahweh’s friendship is with the upright. Also include Proverbs 3:33, where Yahweh’s curse is in the house of the wicked but he blesses the home of the righteous. Then compare mockers with the humble and the wise with fools.

Proverbs 3:31, Proverbs 3:32, Proverbs 3:33, Proverbs 3:34, Proverbs 3:35

5

Closing: Say the lesson in your own words

4 min

Invite each child to finish one sentence: “Wisdom is valuable because...” or “A wise choice from this passage is...”. Briefly review that wisdom is precious, peaceful, tied to Yahweh’s order, and visible in doing good, avoiding harm and choosing humility. End by reading Proverbs 3:17, Proverbs 3:27 and Proverbs 3:35 once more.

Wisdom Reminder Card

What you’ll need

  • card or paper
  • pencils or markers
  • Bible text of Proverbs 3:13–35
  • scissors if desired

Try it together

  1. Ask each child to choose one verse or part of a verse from Proverbs 3:13–35 that they want to remember.
  2. Have them write the reference clearly on a small card and copy a short phrase from the verse.
  3. Invite them to add a simple picture, symbol or border that matches the verse, such as a path, a tree or helping hands.
  4. Let each child explain how their chosen verse teaches wisdom in everyday life.
  5. Take the cards home or place them where the group can see them during review.

This activity fits the passage because children choose a key verse to keep before their eyes, echoing the instruction to keep sound wisdom and discretion in view in Proverbs 3:21.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, pre-select three short verse choices such as Proverbs 3:13, Proverbs 3:17 or Proverbs 3:27 and let them draw more than they write.
  • For older or stronger readers, ask them to compare two parts of the passage, such as the blessings of wisdom in Proverbs 3:13–18 and the warnings about violent, wicked, mocking and foolish ways in Proverbs 3:31–35.

An optional closing prayer

“Yahweh, please help us value wisdom, treat our neighbours well, and choose humble and peaceful ways. Help us remember what we learned from Proverbs 3 today. Amen.”

Proverbs 3

13 Happy is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gets understanding.

14 For her good profit is better than getting silver, and her return is better than fine gold.

15 She is more precious than rubies. None of the things you can desire are to be compared to her.

16 Length of days is in her right hand. In her left hand are riches and honor.

17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness. All her paths are peace.

18 She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her. Happy is everyone who retains her.

19 By wisdom Yahweh founded the earth. By understanding, he established the heavens.

20 By his knowledge, the depths were broken up, and the skies drop down the dew.

21 My son, let them not depart from your eyes. Keep sound wisdom and discretion,

22 so they will be life to your soul, and grace for your neck.

23 Then you shall walk in your way securely. Your foot won’t stumble.

24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, you will lie down, and your sleep will be sweet.

25 Don’t be afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it comes;

26 for Yahweh will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being taken.

27 Don’t withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do it.

28 Don’t say to your neighbor, “Go, and come again; tomorrow I will give it to you,” when you have it by you.

29 Don’t devise evil against your neighbor, since he dwells securely by you.

30 Don’t strive with a man without cause, if he has done you no harm.

31 Don’t envy the man of violence. Choose none of his ways.

32 For the perverse is an abomination to Yahweh, but his friendship is with the upright.

33 Yahweh’s curse is in the house of the wicked, but he blesses the habitation of the righteous.

34 Surely he mocks the mockers, but he gives grace to the humble.

35 The wise will inherit glory, but shame will be the promotion of fools.
