Proverbs 8: The Excellence of Wisdom

Proverbs 8:1–36

Proverbs 8 speaks as if wisdom is a person calling out in public. In this lesson, children will hear what wisdom says, notice what wisdom values, and explain why listening to wisdom matters.

6–10 years30 minutes

Before you teach

This chapter presents wisdom raising her voice at roads, gates and doors, calling people to listen. Wisdom speaks about truth, righteousness, justice and the fear of Yahweh, then describes being present at the beginning of Yahweh’s work before ending with a call to keep wisdom’s ways.

Learning aim

Students will be able to name two things wisdom says about herself in Proverbs 8 and explain that this passage calls people to listen to wisdom and keep her ways.

1

Welcome: Where do voices call to us?

4 min

Ask children where they hear important voices each day, such as at home, school or crossing a road. Then explain that in Proverbs 8, wisdom is pictured as calling out where people pass by. Introduce the idea that this chapter wants listeners to stop and pay attention to what wisdom says.

Proverbs 8:1, Proverbs 8:2, Proverbs 8:3, Proverbs 8:4

2

Read and explain: Wisdom calls everyone to learn

8 min

Read verses 1 to 11 aloud. Point out that wisdom calls loudly and publicly, not secretly. She invites simple people and fools to gain prudence and understanding. Her words are described as true, right and righteous. She says instruction and knowledge are better than silver, gold and rubies, showing that wisdom is more valuable than riches.

Proverbs 8:1, Proverbs 8:5, Proverbs 8:6, Proverbs 8:7, Proverbs 8:8, Proverbs 8:10, Proverbs 8:11

3

Discuss: What does wisdom love and hate?

6 min

Read verses 12 to 21. Help children see that wisdom is joined with prudence, knowledge, discretion, counsel and understanding. The fear of Yahweh is linked with hating evil, pride, arrogance, the evil way and a perverse mouth. Wisdom also speaks about righteousness and justice, so discuss what truthful and fair choices can look like in ordinary life.

Proverbs 8:12, Proverbs 8:13, Proverbs 8:14, Proverbs 8:15, Proverbs 8:20

4

Make and respond: Wisdom reminder card

8 min

Read selected verses from 22 to 36 and explain that wisdom says she was there at the beginning of Yahweh’s work and rejoiced before him. Then children choose one key verse or phrase from the passage for a reminder card. They draw a door, gate or path and add words about listening, being wise, or keeping wisdom’s ways.

Proverbs 8:22, Proverbs 8:27, Proverbs 8:30, Proverbs 8:32, Proverbs 8:33, Proverbs 8:34, Proverbs 8:35, Proverbs 8:36

5

Closing: Life-giving wisdom

4 min

Finish by reviewing the chapter’s final appeal. Wisdom says the one who hears and finds her is blessed, finds life and receives favour from Yahweh. The one who rejects wisdom harms himself. Invite each child to say one sentence beginning, “Wisdom teaches me to...” so they can express the main message in their own words.

Proverbs 8:32, Proverbs 8:34, Proverbs 8:35, Proverbs 8:36

Questions to explore

Where does wisdom stand and call, and what does that show about who can hear her?

Look at the places named in the chapter and notice that wisdom calls in public where people travel and enter the city.

Proverbs 8:2, Proverbs 8:3, Proverbs 8:4

What does wisdom say is better than silver, gold and rubies?

Find the verses that compare instruction and knowledge with valuable things and say why wisdom is precious.

Proverbs 8:10, Proverbs 8:11, Proverbs 8:19

How does the chapter end, and what two different results are given for listening to wisdom or rejecting her?

Read the final verses carefully and compare the words about life, favour and harm.

Wisdom Gate Reminder Card

What you’ll need

  • card or paper
  • pencils or textas
  • Bible
  • scissors

Try it together

  1. Read Proverbs 8:32-35 together and let each child choose one short phrase from the passage.
  2. Fold or cut the paper into a small card shape.
  3. Draw a gate, doorway or path on the front to match the images in Proverbs 8.
  4. Write the chosen words inside the card and decorate it with symbols for truth, justice or listening.
  5. Take turns reading the cards aloud and saying where each child could keep the reminder this week.

The card connects with wisdom calling at gates and doors and with the blessing of hearing and keeping wisdom’s ways.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, offer two or three short phrase choices to copy, such as 'Hear instruction' or 'Finds life'.
  • For older or more confident children, ask them to compare verses 10 to 11 with verses 34 to 35 and write one sentence explaining why wisdom is worth seeking.

An optional closing prayer

You may pray: “God, please help us listen to what is true and right, turn away from evil, and grow in wisdom as we hear your word.”

Proverbs 8

1 Doesn’t wisdom cry out? Doesn’t understanding raise her voice?

2 On the top of high places by the way, where the paths meet, she stands.

3 Beside the gates, at the entry of the city, at the entry doors, she cries aloud:

4 “I call to you men! I send my voice to the sons of mankind.

5 You simple, understand prudence! You fools, be of an understanding heart!

6 Hear, for I will speak excellent things. The opening of my lips is for right things.

7 For my mouth speaks truth. Wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

8 All the words of my mouth are in righteousness. There is nothing crooked or perverse in them.

9 They are all plain to him who understands, right to those who find knowledge.

10 Receive my instruction rather than silver, knowledge rather than choice gold.

11 For wisdom is better than rubies. All the things that may be desired can’t be compared to it.

12 “I, wisdom, have made prudence my dwelling. Find out knowledge and discretion.

13 The fear of Yahweh is to hate evil. I hate pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth.

14 Counsel and sound knowledge are mine. I have understanding and power.

15 By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.

16 By me princes rule, nobles, and all the righteous rulers of the earth.

17 I love those who love me. Those who seek me diligently will find me.

18 With me are riches, honor, enduring wealth, and prosperity.

19 My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, my yield than choice silver.

20 I walk in the way of righteousness, in the middle of the paths of justice,

21 that I may give wealth to those who love me. I fill their treasuries.

22 “Yahweh possessed me in the beginning of his work, before his deeds of old.

23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, before the earth existed.

24 When there were no depths, I was born, when there were no springs abounding with water.

25 Before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was born;

26 while as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the beginning of the dust of the world.

27 When he established the heavens, I was there. When he set a circle on the surface of the deep,

28 when he established the clouds above, when the springs of the deep became strong,

29 when he gave to the sea its boundary, that the waters should not violate his commandment, when he marked out the foundations of the earth,

30 then I was the craftsman by his side. I was a delight day by day, always rejoicing before him,

31 rejoicing in his whole world. My delight was with the sons of men.

32 “Now therefore, my sons, listen to me, for blessed are those who keep my ways.

33 Hear instruction, and be wise. Don’t refuse it.

34 Blessed is the man who hears me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at my door posts.

35 For whoever finds me finds life, and will obtain favor from Yahweh.

36 But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul. All those who hate me love death.”
