Psalm 132: The LORD Has Chosen Zion

Psalms 132:1–18

Psalm 132 is a prayer-poem that remembers David’s strong vow, joins a group prayer for worship, and ends with the LORD’s own words about Zion, blessing and David’s line.

6–10 years30 minutes

Before you teach

This psalm begins by asking the LORD to remember David’s affliction and oath to find a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob. It then shifts to a shared prayer about worship, priests and the anointed one. The final verses speak the LORD’s promises about David, Zion and blessing there.

Learning aim

Students will identify the psalm’s movement from David’s vow, to the people’s prayer, to the LORD’s promises about Zion and David.

1

Welcome: Listen for the movement of the psalm

4 min

Tell the class they are listening to a poem with different parts. Ask them to raise a finger when they hear words about David’s promise, open a hand when they hear a group prayer, and place both hands still when they hear the LORD’s settled promises. Read the whole psalm aloud once, slowly.

Psalms 132:1, Psalms 132:5, Psalms 132:7, Psalms 132:8, Psalms 132:11, Psalms 132:13

2

Read and explain: David’s vow to find a place

6 min

Read verses 1 to 5 again. Explain that the speaker asks the LORD to remember David and his affliction, then repeats David’s oath. David says he will not rest in his house or sleep in his bed until he finds a place for the LORD, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.

Psalms 132:1, Psalms 132:2, Psalms 132:3, Psalms 132:4, Psalms 132:5

3

Discuss: The shift to ‘we’ and the shared prayer

6 min

Read verses 6 to 10. Ask children to spot the change from “I” to “we”. Discuss how the poem moves from remembering David’s vow to a group saying, “We will go” and “We will worship”. Point out the prayer for the LORD to arise, for priests to be clothed with righteousness, and for the anointed one.

Psalms 132:6, Psalms 132:7, Psalms 132:8, Psalms 132:9, Psalms 132:10

4

Make and respond: Illustrated prayer-image card

8 min

Children choose one image or line from the psalm and make a small card. Encourage them to pick something the poem says, such as a dwelling place, footstool, ark, bread, lamp or crown. They may copy a short phrase from the psalm and add one sentence of response that fits praise, need, joy or trust.

Psalms 132:5, Psalms 132:7, Psalms 132:8, Psalms 132:15, Psalms 132:17, Psalms 132:18

5

Closing: Review the LORD’s promises in the final verses

6 min

Read verses 11 to 18 aloud as the closing review. Help students restate the psalm’s movement in order: David’s vow, the people’s prayer, then the LORD’s promises. Ask them to name what the LORD promises, including a throne for David’s line, Zion as his habitation, bread for the poor, joy, a lamp for his anointed, and a shining crown.

Psalms 132:11, Psalms 132:12, Psalms 132:13, Psalms 132:14, Psalms 132:15, Psalms 132:16, Psalms 132:17, Psalms 132:18

Questions to explore

In verses 1 to 5, what does David say he will not do until he finds a place for the LORD?

Look for the repeated “I will not” lines and then the purpose given at the end of the section.

Psalms 132:3, Psalms 132:4, Psalms 132:5

Which words show that the poem changes into something a group says together?

Find the lines where the speaker says “we will go” and “we will worship”.

Psalms 132:6, Psalms 132:7

What does the LORD promise about Zion and David in the last part of the psalm?

Listen for the pictures and promises about habitation, bread, priests, a lamp and a shining crown.

Illustrated Psalm 132 Prayer Card

What you’ll need

  • paper or card
  • pencils or textas
  • crayons or coloured pencils
  • Bible text of Psalm 132:1-18

Try it together

  1. Choose one image from the psalm, such as a dwelling place, footstool, ark, bread, lamp or crown.
  2. Draw the image clearly on one side of the card.
  3. Write one short line from the psalm or a short prayer that matches the image on the other side.
  4. Share the card and explain whether your line expresses praise, need, joy or trust from the psalm.

The card helps children notice how Psalm 132 uses images and prayer language in different parts of the poem.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, offer three image choices only and let them copy a short phrase such as “We will worship” or “This is my resting place”.
  • For older or more confident children, ask them to sort verses into three parts: David remembered, the people praying, and the LORD speaking.

An optional closing prayer

You may pray: “LORD, help us listen carefully to this psalm. Teach us to notice its prayers and promises, and help us respond with worship and joy.”

Psalms 132

1 Yahweh, remember David and all his affliction,

2 how he swore to Yahweh, and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:

3 “Surely I will not come into the structure of my house, nor go up into my bed;

4 I will not give sleep to my eyes, or slumber to my eyelids,

5 until I find out a place for Yahweh, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

6 Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah. We found it in the field of Jaar.

7 “We will go into his dwelling place. We will worship at his footstool.”

8 Arise, Yahweh, into your resting place, you, and the ark of your strength.

9 Let your priests be clothed with righteousness. Let your saints shout for joy!

10 For your servant David’s sake, don’t turn away the face of your anointed one.

11 Yahweh has sworn to David in truth. He will not turn from it: “I will set the fruit of your body on your throne.

12 If your children will keep my covenant, my testimony that I will teach them, their children also will sit on your throne forever more.”

13 For Yahweh has chosen Zion. He has desired it for his habitation.

14 “This is my resting place forever. I will live here, for I have desired it.

15 I will abundantly bless her provision. I will satisfy her poor with bread.

16 I will also clothe her priests with salvation. Her saints will shout aloud for joy.

17 I will make the horn of David to bud there. I have ordained a lamp for my anointed.

18 I will clothe his enemies with shame, but on himself, his crown will shine.”
