Psalm 33: Praise to the Creator
Psalms 33:1–22
Psalm 33 is a song calling people to rejoice, sing, and stand in awe of Yahweh. It ties praise to who he is: true in word, faithful in work, Creator of all, and the one his people trust.
Before you teach
The psalm first addresses the righteous and upright, then gives reasons for praise. It moves from music and joy, to Yahweh’s word in creation, to his rule over nations and people, and ends with a prayer of trust and hope in his loving kindness.
Describe the central teaching of Psalm 33: Praise to the Creator, using two details from the reading. Psalm 33 teaches that Yahweh deserves joyful praise because his word is true, his rule stands firm, and his people place their hope in him.

Read and explain the passage
8 minThe psalm opens by calling the righteous and upright to rejoice, give thanks, and sing. Praise is fitting for them. Music is part of this response, with lyre and harp, and the song is to be new, skilful, and full of joyful shouting to Yahweh.
Because Yahweh spoke and it was done, all the earth is called to fear him and stand in awe. Human plans do not finally stand against him. The counsel of nations can fail, but Yahweh’s counsel stands forever. Blessed are the people whose God is Yahweh.
Yahweh sees all people and considers their works, because he fashions their hearts. So kings, mighty men, and war horses are not the true source of safety. Yahweh’s eye is on those who fear him and hope in his loving kindness. The psalm ends with waiting, trust, joy, and prayer.
