Psalm 93: The LORD Reigns!

Psalms 93:1–5

Psalm 93 is a short praise poem with strong images and direct words to Yahweh. In this lesson, children will identify who is being addressed, notice the poem’s pictures, and trace how the psalm moves from Yahweh’s reign to his firm statutes and holiness.

6–10 years30 minutes

Before you teach

These five verses speak directly to Yahweh with words like “Your throne”, “You are”, “Your statutes” and “your house”. The poem describes Yahweh as reigning in majesty and strength, then mentions the world, God’s throne, rising floods, mighty waters, firm statutes and holiness. These details come from Psalms 93:1–5.

Learning aim

Students will be able to identify that the poem addresses Yahweh, name three images in Psalm 93, and explain that the psalm teaches Yahweh reigns, is mightier than the floods, and his statutes stand firm.

1

Welcome: Hear the main line

5 min

Say the title and main line together: “Yahweh reigns!” Ask children to listen for words that show power, stability and direct praise. Explain that this is a poem, so it uses picture words such as clothing, throne, floods and waves. Also listen for who is being spoken to in the psalm.

Psalms 93:1, Psalms 93:2, Psalms 93:3, Psalms 93:5

2

Read and explain: Who is addressed and how he reigns

7 min

Read verses 1 and 2 slowly. Point out that the poem speaks to Yahweh, shown by “Your throne” and “You are”. Notice the images: Yahweh is “clothed with majesty” and “armed with strength”. The world is established, and God’s throne is established from long ago. The poem also says, “You are from everlasting.”

Psalms 93:1, Psalms 93:2

3

Discuss the movement: From floods to the Lord above

6 min

Read verses 3 and 4. Ask children what keeps getting repeated. The floods lift up their voice and waves, making a picture of loud, rising water. Then the poem answers that Yahweh on high is mighty above the voices of many waters and mighty breakers. The movement goes from noise and force to Yahweh’s greater might.

Psalms 93:3, Psalms 93:4

4

Make and respond: Image and praise card

8 min

Children make a simple card with two parts. In one part, they draw one image from the psalm such as a throne, waves or a robe. In the other part, they keep the Bible text and their own response separate by writing one line from the psalm and then adding their own short response underneath.

Psalms 93:1, Psalms 93:2, Psalms 93:4, Psalms 93:5

5

Closing: Firm statutes and holiness

4 min

Read verse 5 to finish. Point out that the poem is still speaking to Yahweh with “Your statutes” and “your house”. This verse says Yahweh’s statutes stand firm, and holiness adorns his house forever more. Invite children to name one truth they learned about Yahweh before ending with the words, “Yahweh reigns”.

Psalms 93:5, Psalms 93:1

Questions to explore

Who is being addressed in this poem, and which words show that the speaker is talking to him directly?

Look for the name Yahweh and for direct words such as “Your throne”, “You are”, “Your statutes” and “your house”.

Psalms 93:2, Psalms 93:5

What words in verses 1 and 2 show that Yahweh’s rule is steady and lasting?

Look for repeated ideas about what is established and for the words about God’s throne being from long ago and God being from everlasting.

Psalms 93:1, Psalms 93:2

How do the floods sound in verse 3, and what answer does verse 4 give?

Notice that the floods lift up their voice and waves, then the next verse says Yahweh on high is mighty above those many waters.

Psalms 93:3, Psalms 93:4

Make, think or respond

Throne, Waves and Word Card

What you’ll need

  • paper or card
  • pencils or crayons
  • blue and dark coloured pencils
  • marker

Try it together

  1. Fold a sheet in half.
  2. On the front, draw one image from the psalm such as a throne, waves or a robe.
  3. Inside, write one line quoted from the psalm, then on a new line write your own short response.
  4. Invite each child to show the image they chose and tell which verse matches the quoted line.

This card helps children separate the psalm’s own words from their personal response while noticing the poem’s images and message about Yahweh’s reign, might and firm statutes.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, pre-write a short quoted line from the psalm for tracing, and let them add one spoken or drawn response based on Psalms 93:1 or Psalms 93:4.
  • For older or stronger readers, ask them to explain how the direct address to Yahweh in Psalms 93:2 and Psalms 93:5 shapes the poem as praise, and how Psalms 93:1–2 and Psalms 93:5 both speak about firmness and lasting rule.

An optional closing prayer

“Yahweh, you reign. You are mighty on high, and your statutes stand firm. Help us remember these words today. Amen.”
