Single lesson
Rahab and the Spies
Joshua 2:1–24
In this lesson, children will follow the account of Rahab and the spies, notice key choices each person makes, and see how the passage shows fear, kindness and confidence about what Yahweh will do.
Before you teach
Joshua secretly sent two spies to look at the land, including Jericho. They came to Rahab’s house. Joshua 2:1 identifies Rahab as a prostitute, which means this is how the passage introduces her. The king of Jericho heard about the spies and sent orders to bring them out, but Rahab hid them and later helped them escape.
Students will be able to sequence Joshua 2:1–24, name Rahab’s and the spies’ main choices, and explain from the passage that Rahab recognised Yahweh’s power and acted kindly toward the spies.
Welcome: Spot the main people and place
4 minShow children the reference and introduce the main people in the account: Joshua, the two spies, Rahab, and the king of Jericho. Explain that the class will listen for choices people make and what happens next. Tell children this story includes hiding, speaking, promises, instructions and a report back to Joshua.
Joshua 2:1, Joshua 2:2, Joshua 2:3, Joshua 2:23, Joshua 2:24
Read and explain: The spies arrive and Rahab hides them
7 minRead Joshua 2:1–7 aloud. Explain that spies are men sent to view the land. Joshua 2:1 identifies Rahab as a prostitute, so that is part of how the story introduces her. The king hears the spies have come and sends for them. Rahab hides the men on the roof under flax, while the pursuers head towards the Jordan and the gate is shut.
Joshua 2:1, Joshua 2:2, Joshua 2:3, Joshua 2:4, Joshua 2:5, Joshua 2:6, Joshua 2:7
Discuss: What Rahab says about Yahweh
7 minRead Joshua 2:8–14. Slow down over Rahab’s words. She says the people have heard what Yahweh did at the Red Sea and to Sihon and Og. She says, 'Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.' Then she asks for kind treatment for her family because she has dealt kindly with the spies.
Joshua 2:8, Joshua 2:9, Joshua 2:10, Joshua 2:11, Joshua 2:12, Joshua 2:13, Joshua 2:14
Make and respond: Build the agreement and escape sequence
8 minChildren make sequence cards for the last part of the account: the cord, the window, the mountain, three days, and the return to Joshua. As they work, explain the oath’s terms: Rahab ties the scarlet line, gathers her family inside, keeps the matter secret, and the spies return with their report.
Joshua 2:15, Joshua 2:16, Joshua 2:17, Joshua 2:18, Joshua 2:19, Joshua 2:20, Joshua 2:21, Joshua 2:22, Joshua 2:23, Joshua 2:24
Closing: Review the choices and outcomes
4 minFinish by asking children to retell the story in five steps. Emphasise that Rahab tied the scarlet line in the window, the spies were not found, and they returned saying Yahweh had delivered the land into their hands. Invite children to share one thing they learned about God and one human choice from the passage.

Joshua 2:4, Joshua 2:5, Joshua 2:6
What reasons did Rahab give for believing Yahweh had given the land to Israel?
Listen for the things she says the people of Jericho had heard about Yahweh and Israel.
Joshua 2:9, Joshua 2:10, Joshua 2:11
What instructions did the spies give Rahab so their oath would apply to her household?

Rahab Story Sequence Cards
What you’ll need
- plain paper or card
- pencils or textas
- scissors
- Bible
Try it together
- Read Joshua 2:15–24 together and list five key moments from the escape and return.
- Give each child five small pieces of paper or card to draw one moment on each card.
- Ask children to place their cards in the correct order and retell the story to a partner using the cards.
- If time allows, children can add a short caption or verse reference to each card.
- Finish by comparing the card order with the Bible text.
This activity helps children follow the sequence of events in Joshua 2 and notice the choices, instructions and outcomes in the passage.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, prepare five spoken prompts such as 'window', 'mountain' and 'Joshua', and let them draw one simple picture for each instead of writing captions.
- For older or stronger readers, ask them to add the matching verse reference to each sequence card and explain which choices led to each outcome.
An optional closing prayer
'God, thank you for this account in your word. Please help us listen carefully, speak truthfully about what we read, and learn from Rahab’s words about your power. Amen.'

Joshua 2
1 Joshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men out of Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, including Jericho.” They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and slept there.
2 The king of Jericho was told, “Behold, men of the children of Israel came in here tonight to spy out the land.”
3 Jericho’s king sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered into your house; for they have come to spy out all the land.”
4 The woman took the two men and hid them. Then she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I didn’t know where they came from.
5 About the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, the men went out. Where the men went, I don’t know. Pursue them quickly. You may catch up with them.”
6 But she had brought them up to the roof, and hidden them under the stalks of flax which she had laid in order on the roof.
7 The men pursued them along the way to the fords of the Jordan River. As soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate.
8 Before they had lain down, she came up to them on the roof.
9 She said to the men, “I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.
10 For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Red Sea before you, when you came out of Egypt; and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og, whom you utterly destroyed.
11 As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, and there wasn’t any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.
12 Now therefore, please swear to me by Yahweh, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a true sign;
13 and that you will save alive my father, my mother, my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death.”
14 The men said to her, “Our life for yours, if you don’t talk about this business of ours; and it shall be, when Yahweh gives us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you.”
15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window; for her house was on the side of the wall, and she lived on the wall.
16 She said to them, “Go to the mountain, lest the pursuers find you. Hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers have returned. Afterward, you may go your way.”
17 The men said to her, “We will be guiltless of this your oath which you’ve made us to swear.
18 Behold, when we come into the land, tie this line of scarlet thread in the window which you used to let us down. Gather to yourself into the house your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household.
19 It shall be that whoever goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood will be on his head, and we will be guiltless. Whoever is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand is on him.
20 But if you talk about this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless of your oath which you’ve made us to swear.”
21 She said, “Let it be as you have said.” She sent them away, and they departed. Then she tied the scarlet line in the window.
22 They went and came to the mountain, and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had returned. The pursuers sought them all along the way, but didn’t find them.
23 Then the two men returned, descended from the mountain, crossed the river, and came to Joshua the son of Nun. They told him all that had happened to them.
24 They said to Joshua, “Truly Yahweh has delivered all the land into our hands. Moreover, all the inhabitants of the land melt away before us.”
