Welcome: What kind of passage is this?

5 min

Begin by explaining that Revelation 22 includes visions, direct speech, blessing, warning, and invitation. Ask students to listen for clues showing this is not told as an ordinary historical story. Read the title and aim aloud. Then have students listen for repeated words such as “come”, “book”, “soon”, and “water of life”.

2

Read and explain: The river, tree, throne, and light

9 min

Read Revelation 22:1–5 slowly. Explain that John is being shown images: a river of water of life, the tree of life, no curse, God’s throne, God’s servants, God’s name on their foreheads, and no night. Keep observations close to the text. The passage presents hope through life, healing, service, God’s presence, and lasting light.

3

Discuss: Faithful words, right worship, and Jesus coming soon

10 min

Read Revelation 22:6–17. Trace its named servants, prophets, keepers, assemblies, hearers and thirsty. The words are faithful/true and must happen soon; the keeper is blessed. The angel refuses John’s worship as a fellow servant: worship God. The prophecy must not be sealed because the time is at hand; retain the severe 22:11 statements without treating them as a general instruction to commit injustice. The coming speaker brings reward according to work and names Alpha/Omega, First/Last and Beginning/End. Keep this reading’s blessing on those doing his commandments and its outside list. Jesus identifies his testimony for the assemblies, David-root/offspring and bright morning star. Spirit, bride and hearer say come; thirsty and willing receive life-water freely. Keep the invitation together with the commands and warnings.

Closing: The warning, the response, and the final blessing

6 min

Read Revelation 22:18–21. Explain that the warning is specifically about the words of the prophecy of this book. If anyone adds to them, God will add to that person the plagues written in this book. If anyone takes away from them, God will take away that person’s part from the tree of life and the holy city written in this book. Finish with “Come, Lord Jesus” and the closing blessing of grace.

Questions to explore

Who does this chapter say the message is for?

Look for the named audiences: “bondservants”, “those who keep the words of this book”, “the assemblies”, “he who hears”, and “he who is thirsty”.

Revelation 22:6, Revelation 22:7, Revelation 22:9, Revelation 22:16, Revelation 22:17

What warning is given about this prophecy, and what exactly is the warning attached to?

Read carefully for the repeated phrase about “the words of the prophecy of this book” and notice the two actions forbidden: adding and taking away.

Revelation 22:18, Revelation 22:19

Which images in the chapter clearly work as symbolic or visionary language, and what meaning does the passage itself connect to them?

Use only links stated in the text, such as water with life, leaves with healing, and light with the Lord God illuminating them.

Revelation 22:1, Revelation 22:2, Revelation 22:5, Revelation 22:17

Optional learning response Free teaching material

Make and respond: Symbol chart from the passage

Students work in pairs to make a two-column chart: symbol or image, and what the text links with it. Encourage them to support each entry from the verses, such as river with life, leaves with healing, throne with God and the Lamb, water of life with the invitation to come. Then share one warning and one hope each group found.

Revelation 22 Symbol Chart

What you’ll need

  • paper
  • pens or pencils
  • Bible text copy
  • whiteboard or plain card

Try it together

  1. Draw a chart with two headings: “Image or symbol” and “What the text says about it”.
  2. Read Revelation 22:1–5 and 17 for images and invitation, then 18–19 for the warning. List the river, tree, leaves, throne, name, light and water of life, and record the warning as a direct statement rather than forcing it into an image.
  3. Write a verse reference beside each entry and add only meanings stated in the passage itself.
  4. Circle one image that shows hope and one statement that gives warning, then share your choices with the group.

This activity helps students distinguish the chapter’s symbolic language from ordinary narrative by tying each image to words actually found in Revelation 22.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger or less confident readers, pre-write the chart headings and list possible images for them to match with verse references.
  • For older or advanced students, add a third column titled “Audience or response” so they connect each section with hearers, keepers, worshippers, or those invited to come.

An optional closing prayer

Suggested prayer: Lord Jesus, please help us hear your words carefully, worship God rightly, and respond to your warning and hope with honesty and reverence. Amen.

Revelation 22

1 He showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb,

2 in the middle of its street. On this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits, yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

3 There will be no curse any more. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will serve him.

4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.

5 There will be no night, and they need no lamp light or sun light; for the Lord God will illuminate them. They will reign forever and ever.

6 He said to me, “These words are faithful and true. The Lord God of the spirits of the prophets sent his angel to show to his bondservants the things which must happen soon.”

7 “Behold, I am coming soon! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”

8 Now I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. When I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who had shown me these things.

9 He said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow bondservant with you and with your brothers, the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”

10 He said to me, “Don’t seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is at hand.

11 He who acts unjustly, let him act unjustly still. He who is filthy, let him be filthy still. He who is righteous, let him do righteousness still. He who is holy, let him be holy still.”

12 “Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, to repay to each man according to his work.

13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

14 Blessed are those who do his commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter in by the gates into the city.

15 Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

16 I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify these things to you for the assemblies. I am the root and the offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.”

17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” He who hears, let him say, “Come!” He who is thirsty, let him come. He who desires, let him take the water of life freely.

18 I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book.

19 If anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life, and out of the holy city, which are written in this book.

20 He who testifies these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen! Yes, come, Lord Jesus!

21 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with all the saints. Amen.
