Romans 3: God Remains Faithful

Romans 3:1–8; Romans 3:9–20; Romans 3:21–31

Romans 3 moves from hard news to hopeful news. It says all people are under sin, that God remains true, and that righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ, not earned by works of the law.

Before you teach

In this passage, the argument first asks whether Jewish privilege means God is less faithful when some are unfaithful. It then says both Jews and Greeks are under sin. After that, it explains that God’s righteousness has been revealed through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.

Learning aim

Students will be able to state that Romans 3 teaches all people are sinners, God remains true, and people are justified by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

1

Welcome: hard news and good news

4 min

Begin by telling the class that today’s passage has both a serious problem and a hopeful answer. Ask children to listen for three ideas as you read: what God is like, what people are like, and how a person can be made right with God. This prepares them to follow the flow of Romans 3.

Romans 3:4, Romans 3:23, Romans 3:24, Romans 3:28

2

Read and explain: God stays true

7 min

Read Romans 3:1-8. Explain that being 'entrusted with the revelations of God' means God gave his words to the Jews. Point out that some people were unfaithful, but that does not make God unfaithful. Verse 4 says God is true. Verse 8 also rejects the idea that people should do evil so good may come.

Romans 3:2, Romans 3:3, Romans 3:4, Romans 3:8

3

Discuss: all are under sin

6 min

Read Romans 3:9-20. Explain that 'all under sin' means no group can claim to be better before God. The list in verses 10-18 shows wrong in words, actions and attitude. Then verse 20 says the law does not justify people. Instead, it brings knowledge of sin. Ask children to name repeated words they hear, such as 'no one' and 'all'.

Romans 3:9, Romans 3:10, Romans 3:13, Romans 3:18, Romans 3:20

4

Make and respond: faith reminder card

9 min

Read Romans 3:21-31. Explain that God’s righteousness is revealed apart from the law and comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. Verse 23 says all have sinned. Verses 24 and 28 say people are justified freely by grace and by faith apart from works of the law. Children make a small reminder card with one short verse or phrase from the passage.

Romans 3:21, Romans 3:22, Romans 3:23, Romans 3:24, Romans 3:28

5

Closing: no boasting, one God

4 min

Finish by reviewing the whole passage in three short statements: God is true, all have sinned, and justification is by faith. Emphasise that boasting is excluded because this is God’s gracious work. End by asking children to read their reminder card aloud or say which verse best explains the main message.

Romans 3:4, Romans 3:23, Romans 3:27, Romans 3:30

Questions to explore

In Romans 3:3-4, what answer is given to the idea that human unfaithfulness could cancel God’s faithfulness?

Look for the strong reply and the description of God in verse 4.

Romans 3:3, Romans 3:4

According to Romans 3:19-20, what does the law do, and what does it not do?

The passage says the law closes every mouth and brings knowledge of sin, while it does not justify people by works.

Romans 3:19, Romans 3:20

What words in Romans 3:21-28 show that being right with God is God’s gift rather than something people earn?

Listen for phrases such as 'through faith', 'freely by his grace', and 'apart from the works of the law'.

Romans 3:22, Romans 3:24, Romans 3:28

Make, think or respond

Romans 3 Reminder Card

What you’ll need

  • Paper or card scraps
  • Pencils or pens
  • Crayons or coloured pencils
  • Bible text of Romans 3:21-28 or 3:23-24

Try it together

  1. Read aloud Romans 3:23-24 and Romans 3:28 together.
  2. Ask each child to choose one short phrase from the passage, such as 'all have sinned', 'freely by his grace', or 'justified by faith'.
  3. Children write the phrase on a small card and decorate it with simple symbols or colours.
  4. Invite each child to say how their chosen phrase fits the passage’s main teaching.

The card helps children remember the main point that all have sinned and that justification comes by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, give two or three short phrase options from Romans 3:23-24 and let them copy one rather than choose from the whole section.
  • For older or more confident children, ask them to sort key words under three headings: God, people, and faith, using Romans 3:4, Romans 3:23-24, and Romans 3:28.

An optional closing prayer

Proposed words: God, thank you that you are true. Thank you for showing us that all people need your grace. Please help us trust in Jesus Christ and remember that we cannot boast in ourselves.

Romans 3

1 Then what advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the profit of circumcision?

2 Much in every way! Because first of all, they were entrusted with the revelations of God.

3 For what if some were without faith? Will their lack of faith nullify the faithfulness of God?

4 May it never be! Yes, let God be found true, but every man a liar. As it is written, “that you might be justified in your words, and might prevail when you come into judgment.”

5 But if our unrighteousness commends the righteousness of God, what will we say? Is God unrighteous who inflicts wrath? I speak like men do.

6 May it never be! For then how will God judge the world?

7 For if the truth of God through my lie abounded to his glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner?

8 Why not (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), “Let’s do evil, that good may come?” Those who say so are justly condemned.

9 What then? Are we better than they? No, in no way. For we previously warned both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.

10 As it is written, “There is no one righteous; no, not one.

11 There is no one who understands. There is no one who seeks after God.

12 They have all turned away. They have together become unprofitable. There is no one who does good, no, not so much as one.”

13 “Their throat is an open tomb. With their tongues they have used deceit.” “The poison of vipers is under their lips.”

14 “Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”

15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood.

16 Destruction and misery are in their ways.

17 The way of peace, they haven’t known.”

18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

19 Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God.

20 Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight; for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

21 But now apart from the law, a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the law and the prophets;

22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all and on all those who believe. For there is no distinction,

23 for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;

24 being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

25 whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God’s forbearance;

26 to demonstrate his righteousness at this present time, that he might himself be just and the justifier of him who has faith in Jesus.

27 Where then is the boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith.

28 We maintain therefore that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn’t he the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also,

30 since indeed there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.

31 Do we then nullify the law through faith? May it never be! No, we establish the law.
