The Cloud and the Silver Trumpets

Numbers 9:15–10:10

In this lesson, children learn how Yahweh guided Israel by the cloud over the tabernacle and by the silver trumpets, which gave clear signals for the whole community.

6–10 years30 minutes

Before you teach

Numbers 9:15–10:10 presents two connected parts of Israel’s life. First, the cloud over the tabernacle showed when the people were to camp and when they were to travel. Then Yahweh told Moses how two silver trumpets were to be made and used for gathering, journeys, alarms and worship.

Learning aim

Students will be able to explain that Israel stayed or travelled at Yahweh’s command, and that the silver trumpets gave clear signals for gathering, leaders, journeys, priestly use, alarm in danger and worship.

1

Welcome: Stop, wait and go

5 min

Begin with a simple signal game where children freeze, wait or move when you say so. Explain that in this passage Israel did not decide their own timing. They watched the cloud over the tabernacle and responded to Yahweh’s command by staying camped or setting out.

Numbers 9:17, Numbers 9:18, Numbers 9:23

2

Read and explain: The cloud showed when to stay and when to travel

8 min

Read Numbers 9:15–23 aloud. Show that the cloud covered the tabernacle, and at evening it looked like fire until morning. Sometimes it stayed briefly and sometimes for a long time. Israel remained where they were while the cloud stayed, and they travelled when it was taken up.

Numbers 9:15, Numbers 9:16, Numbers 9:20, Numbers 9:21, Numbers 9:22

3

Discuss: Obeying Yahweh meant patience as well as movement

5 min

Point out how often the passage repeats Yahweh’s command. The people obeyed when the wait was overnight, a few days, a month or a year. Help children see that obedience in this passage included waiting carefully as well as moving promptly when the time came.

Numbers 9:18, Numbers 9:21, Numbers 9:22, Numbers 9:23

4

Make and respond: What each trumpet signal meant

8 min

Read Numbers 10:1–10 in order. Explain that two silver trumpets called the whole congregation, one called the leaders, alarms signalled journeys, and the sons of Aaron the priests were to blow them. Also note briefly that an alarm was used when Israel faced oppressors, and the trumpets were blown in gladness, feasts and month beginnings.

Numbers 10:2, Numbers 10:3, Numbers 10:4, Numbers 10:5, Numbers 10:6, Numbers 10:8, Numbers 10:9, Numbers 10:10

5

Closing: Review the cloud and every trumpet purpose

4 min

Finish with a full summary. The cloud showed when Israel should stay or travel. The trumpets called the congregation, gathered leaders, signalled journeys, were blown by the priests, sounded an alarm when oppressors came, and were used in glad days, feasts and month beginnings before Yahweh. Invite children to name one purpose from the passage.

Questions to explore

What did Israel do when the cloud stayed on the tabernacle, and what did they do when the cloud was taken up?

Answer with both parts of the repeated pattern in the passage: they remained encamped while the cloud stayed, and they travelled when it lifted.

Numbers 9:17, Numbers 9:18, Numbers 9:22

What were the different trumpet signals for the whole congregation, the leaders and the journeys of the camps?

Compare the verses about two trumpets, one trumpet and the alarm, and say what each signal was for.

Numbers 10:3, Numbers 10:4, Numbers 10:5, Numbers 10:6, Numbers 10:7

Who was to blow the trumpets, and what did the alarm mean when Israel faced an oppressor?

Look for the verse about the sons of Aaron, the priests, and the verse that speaks about sounding an alarm in war and being remembered before Yahweh.

Numbers 10:8, Numbers 10:9

Cloud and Trumpet Reminder Card

What you’ll need

  • paper or card
  • pencils or markers
  • scissors
  • optional ruler

Try it together

  1. Fold or cut paper into a small card.
  2. On one side, draw a cloud above a tent and write ‘stay’ or ‘go’ to match the passage.
  3. On the other side, draw one or two trumpets and label one meaning such as ‘all gather’, ‘leaders gather’, ‘journey’ or ‘glad day’.
  4. Ask each child to show their card and explain which verse matches their picture or label.

The card helps children remember that Yahweh guided Israel through the cloud and used trumpet signals so the people could respond together in an orderly way.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, limit the reminder card to two simple choices: a cloud for stay or go, and a trumpet for gather.
  • For older or more confident children, ask them to add verse references and include extra labels for ‘priests blow’, ‘alarm’ and ‘gladness’.

An optional closing prayer

You may pray: ‘Yahweh God, thank you for giving clear direction to your people. Please help us listen carefully, wait patiently and respond in ways that honour you.’

Numbers 9

15 On the day that the tabernacle was raised up, the cloud covered the tabernacle, even the Tent of the Testimony. At evening it was over the tabernacle, as it were the appearance of fire, until morning.

16 So it was continually. The cloud covered it, and the appearance of fire by night.

17 Whenever the cloud was taken up from over the Tent, then after that the children of Israel traveled; and in the place where the cloud remained, there the children of Israel encamped.

18 At the commandment of Yahweh, the children of Israel traveled, and at the commandment of Yahweh they encamped. As long as the cloud remained on the tabernacle they remained encamped.

19 When the cloud stayed on the tabernacle many days, then the children of Israel kept Yahweh’s command, and didn’t travel.

20 Sometimes the cloud was a few days on the tabernacle; then according to the commandment of Yahweh they remained encamped, and according to the commandment of Yahweh they traveled.

21 Sometimes the cloud was from evening until morning; and when the cloud was taken up in the morning, they traveled; or by day and by night, when the cloud was taken up, they traveled.

22 Whether it was two days, or a month, or a year that the cloud stayed on the tabernacle, remaining on it, the children of Israel remained encamped, and didn’t travel; but when it was taken up, they traveled.

23 At the commandment of Yahweh they encamped, and at the commandment of Yahweh they traveled. They kept Yahweh’s command, at the commandment of Yahweh by Moses.

Numbers 10

1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

2 “Make two trumpets of silver. You shall make them of beaten work. You shall use them for the calling of the congregation and for the journeying of the camps.

3 When they blow them, all the congregation shall gather themselves to you at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

4 If they blow just one, then the princes, the heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather themselves to you.

5 When you blow an alarm, the camps that lie on the east side shall go forward.

6 When you blow an alarm the second time, the camps that lie on the south side shall go forward. They shall blow an alarm for their journeys.

7 But when the assembly is to be gathered together, you shall blow, but you shall not sound an alarm.

8 “The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets. This shall be to you for a statute forever throughout your generations.

9 When you go to war in your land against the adversary who oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets. Then you will be remembered before Yahweh your God, and you will be saved from your enemies.

10 “Also in the day of your gladness, and in your set feasts, and in the beginnings of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be to you for a memorial before your God. I am Yahweh your God.”
