Single lesson
The Gibeonites' Deception
Joshua 9:1–27
In this lesson, children hear how the people of Gibeon tricked Israel, how Joshua and the leaders responded, and what happened next. The passage helps students notice both careless choices and the seriousness of promises made in Yahweh’s name.
Before you teach
Joshua 9:1–27 describes two different responses to Israel. Many kings gathered to fight, while the inhabitants of Gibeon used a ruse to seek peace. Joshua and the leaders examined the travellers’ supplies, made a covenant, then discovered the truth three days later and decided how to act.
Students will be able to sequence Joshua 9:1–27, name the choice to make peace without asking counsel from Yahweh, and describe the outcome for the Gibeonites and Israel’s leaders.
Welcome: Two different plans
4 minShow two simple pictures or objects, one for fighting and one for travelling. Explain that in this passage some kings gathered to fight Joshua and Israel, but the inhabitants of Gibeon chose a different plan. Tell children to listen for what Gibeon did and how Israel responded. Read Joshua 9:1–6 aloud.

Read and explain: The trick and the missed counsel
7 minRead Joshua 9:7–15. Help children notice the old sacks, torn wineskins, old sandals and mouldy bread. Explain that these things were used to make the story sound true. Point out the key choice in verse 14: the men sampled the provisions, but did not ask counsel from Yahweh’s mouth before Joshua made peace and a covenant.

Discuss: The truth comes out
6 minRead Joshua 9:16–21. Ask children to retell the order: covenant first, discovery three days later, travel to the cities, then complaints from the congregation. Explain that the leaders would not strike the Gibeonites because they had sworn by Yahweh, the God of Israel. They chose to let them live and assigned them work for the congregation.

Make and respond: Sequence card timeline
8 minChildren make six small cards showing the main steps: kings gather to fight, Gibeon plans a ruse, old supplies are shown, Israel makes a covenant, the truth is discovered, the Gibeonites become wood cutters and drawers of water. After arranging the cards in order, children say which choice in the passage was careful and which was careless.
Joshua 9:2, Joshua 9:4, Joshua 9:12, Joshua 9:15, Joshua 9:16, Joshua 9:21, Joshua 9:27
Closing: Joshua’s question and the final outcome
5 minRead Joshua 9:22–27. Note Joshua’s direct question, “Why have you deceived us?” Then explain the result: Joshua spared them from being killed, and that day made them wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for Yahweh’s altar. Finish by reviewing what the passage shows about deception, fear and keeping an oath.

Questions to explore
What details did the Gibeonites use to make themselves look as if they had travelled from far away?
Look for the objects and food named in the passage: old sacks, torn wineskins, patched sandals, old garments and dry, mouldy bread.
Joshua 9:4, Joshua 9:5, Joshua 9:12, Joshua 9:13
What important step did the men of Israel fail to take before making peace?
Verse 14 answers this directly by saying they sampled the provisions and did not ask counsel from Yahweh’s mouth.
Joshua 9:14, Joshua 9:15
After the truth was discovered, why did Israel’s leaders say they could not strike the Gibeonites?
The leaders said they had sworn by Yahweh, the God of Israel, and wanted to avoid wrath because of that oath.

Sequence Card Timeline
What you’ll need
- paper or card
- pencils or crayons
- scissors
- Bible
Try it together
- Read the main parts of Joshua 9 together and choose six key moments from the story.
- Draw one simple picture for each moment on a separate card.
- Mix the cards, then work together to place them in the right order.
- Ask children to explain one choice and one outcome using their ordered cards.
This activity helps children trace the order of Joshua 9:1–27 and connect each choice in the passage with its outcome.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, prepare the six moments orally and let them draw only one or two cards each before sequencing them together.
- For older or confident readers, ask them to label each card with a short phrase from the passage such as 'didn’t ask counsel' or 'we have sworn to them'.
An optional closing prayer
'God, please help us to be truthful, to seek your guidance, and to take our words seriously. Help us learn from what Joshua 9 shows. Amen.'

Joshua 9
1 When all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard of it
2 they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,
4 they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and old, torn-up and bound up wineskins,
5 and old and patched sandals on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy.
6 They went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country. Now therefore make a covenant with us.”
7 The men of Israel said to the Hivites, “What if you live among us? How could we make a covenant with you?”
8 They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” Joshua said to them, “Who are you? Where do you come from?”
9 They said to him, “Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of Yahweh your God; for we have heard of his fame, all that he did in Egypt,
10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.
11 Our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take supplies in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them. Tell them, “We are your servants. Now make a covenant with us.” ’
12 This our bread we took hot for our supplies out of our houses on the day we went out to go to you; but now, behold, it is dry, and has become moldy.
13 These wineskins, which we filled, were new; and behold, they are torn. These our garments and our sandals have become old because of the very long journey.”
14 The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from Yahweh’s mouth.
15 Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The princes of the congregation swore to them.
16 At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they lived among them.
17 The children of Israel traveled and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim.
18 The children of Israel didn’t strike them, because the princes of the congregation had sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. All the congregation murmured against the princes.
19 But all the princes said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. Now therefore we may not touch them.
20 We will do this to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them.”
21 The princes said to them, “Let them live.” So they became wood cutters and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the princes had spoken to them.
22 Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you live among us?
23 Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you will never fail to be slaves, both wood cutters and drawers of water for the house of my God.”
24 They answered Joshua, and said, “Because your servants were certainly told how Yahweh your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
25 Now, behold, we are in your hand. Do to us as it seems good and right to you to do.”
26 He did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they didn’t kill them.
27 That day Joshua made them wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for Yahweh’s altar to this day, in the place which he should choose.
