Single lesson
The Lamp and Listening Well
Mark 4:21–25; Luke 8:16–18
Jesus uses the picture of a lamp and repeated warnings about hearing. This lesson helps children notice what Jesus says about light being seen and about listening carefully to his teaching.
Before you teach
In both Mark 4:21–25 and Luke 8:16–18, Jesus speaks about a lamp being placed on a stand, hidden things coming to light, and the need to hear carefully. The passage joins the lamp picture to Jesus’ warnings about hearing and receiving more.
Students will identify that Jesus teaches people to hear carefully and explain how the lamp picture shows that what he says is not to be hidden.
Welcome: What is a lamp for?
5 minShow a torch or lamp and ask what it is for. Read Mark 4:21 and Luke 8:16 aloud. Help the children notice the answer built into Jesus’ questions: a lamp is not covered or hidden under a bed. It is put on a stand so its light can be seen.
Mark 4:21, Luke 8:16
Read and explain: Hidden things come to light
7 minRead Mark 4:22 and Luke 8:17. Ask the children to listen for the words hidden, secret, revealed and light. Explain that Jesus connects the lamp picture with things becoming known. In these verses, what is hidden is not meant to stay hidden forever.
Mark 4:22, Luke 8:17
Discuss: Hear carefully
6 minRead Mark 4:23–24 and Luke 8:18. Point out Jesus’ strong warnings: ‘let him hear’ and ‘Be careful therefore how you hear’. Talk about the difference between hearing words pass by and paying close attention. Jesus says the way a person hears matters.
Mark 4:23, Mark 4:24, Luke 8:18
Make and respond: Reminder card about hearing
8 minChildren choose a short line from the passage such as ‘let him hear’ or ‘Be careful therefore how you hear’ and make a reminder card. As they work, explain carefully that in these verses Jesus says more will be given to the one who hears, so his warning about hearing should be taken seriously.
Mark 4:24, Mark 4:25, Luke 8:18
Closing: Put the two ideas together
4 minFinish by asking children to say the main teaching in one sentence. Guide them to connect both parts of the passage: a lamp is placed where light can be seen, and Jesus tells people to hear carefully. End by rereading Luke 8:16 and Mark 4:24.
Luke 8:16, Mark 4:24
Questions to explore
Why does Jesus ask whether a lamp is put under a basket, container or bed?
Use Mark 4:21 and Luke 8:16 to show that Jesus expects the listener to answer that a lamp belongs on a stand where its light can be seen.
Mark 4:21, Luke 8:16
What words show that Jesus wants careful attention, not careless hearing?
Look at ‘If any man has ears to hear, let him hear’ and ‘Be careful therefore how you hear’ and notice that both sayings press the listener to pay attention.
Mark 4:23, Luke 8:18
What does Jesus say is connected with hearing in these verses?
Read Mark 4:24–25 and Luke 8:18 closely and answer from the text itself: Jesus says more will be given to the one who hears.

Listen Well Reminder Card
What you’ll need
- paper or card
- pencils or pens
- crayons or markers
- a torch or lamp
Try it together
- Show the torch or lamp and reread Mark 4:21 or Luke 8:16.
- Ask each child to choose one short line from the passage, such as ‘let him hear’ or ‘Be careful therefore how you hear’.
- Children write the line on a small card and decorate it with a lamp or light picture.
- Invite each child to say one place they could keep the card to remind them to listen carefully to Jesus’ teaching.
The card links Jesus’ lamp picture with his warning to hear carefully in Mark 4:21–25 and Luke 8:16–18.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, give two short verse choices to copy and ask them to explain only the lamp picture from Mark 4:21 or Luke 8:16.
- For older or more confident children, ask them to compare the wording of Mark 4:24–25 and Luke 8:18 and explain what Jesus says about hearing.
An optional closing prayer
"Dear God, please help us listen carefully to Jesus’ words and remember what he says. Amen."

Mark 4
21 He said to them, “Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed? Isn’t it put on a stand?
22 For there is nothing hidden except that it should be made known, neither was anything made secret but that it should come to light.
23 If any man has ears to hear, let him hear.”
24 He said to them, “Take heed what you hear. With whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you; and more will be given to you who hear.
25 For whoever has, to him more will be given; and he who doesn’t have, even that which he has will be taken away from him.”
Luke 8
16 “No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a container or puts it under a bed; but puts it on a stand, that those who enter in may see the light.
17 For nothing is hidden that will not be revealed, nor anything secret that will not be known and come to light.
18 Be careful therefore how you hear. For whoever has, to him will be given; and whoever doesn’t have, from him will be taken away even that which he thinks he has.”
