The Lamps and Service of the Levites

Numbers 8:1–26

In Numbers 8:1–26, Yahweh gives instructions about the lamps and about the Levites’ work. This lesson helps children notice who these instructions were for, what happened in the ceremony, and what purpose the Levites had in Israel’s worship setting.

6–10 years30 minutes

Before you teach

The passage begins with Aaron lighting the seven lamps. It then gives instructions to cleanse and present the Levites before Yahweh, explains why they are taken from among the children of Israel, reports that the commands were carried out, and ends with age limits for Levite duties at the Tent of Meeting.

Learning aim

Students will identify the original audience of Numbers 8 and explain two purposes named in the passage for the Levites’ service.

1

Welcome: Who is this instruction for?

5 min

Introduce the passage by writing the names children will hear: Yahweh, Moses, Aaron, Levites, and the children of Israel. Explain that this chapter gives instructions for Israel’s worship setting, not a direct job list for everyone today. Ask children to listen for who is commanded and where the service takes place.

Numbers 8:1, Numbers 8:2, Numbers 8:5, Numbers 8:6, Numbers 8:9, Numbers 8:15

2

Read and explain: Lamps and cleansing for service

7 min

Read verses 1–11. First, Aaron lights the seven lamps so they shine in front of the lamp stand. Then the Levites are cleansed with water, shaving, and washed clothes. After that, the whole congregation is assembled, the people lay hands on the Levites, and Aaron offers them before Yahweh for service.

Numbers 8:2, Numbers 8:3, Numbers 8:7, Numbers 8:9, Numbers 8:10, Numbers 8:11

3

Discuss: Offerings, atonement, and being set apart

6 min

Show that the middle of the passage includes offerings as part of the Levites’ cleansing. A young bull is taken with a meal offering, and another bull is for a sin offering. The Levites lay hands on the bulls, atonement is made for them, and they are offered before Yahweh and separated from among Israel.

Numbers 8:8, Numbers 8:12, Numbers 8:13, Numbers 8:14, Numbers 8:15

4

Make and respond: Create an annotated context chart

7 min

Children make a two-column chart titled ‘What the passage says’ and ‘Careful response’. In the first column they list details from the text such as lamps, cleansing, offerings, firstborn, Tent of Meeting, and age limits. In the second column they write a careful response, clearly marking it as application rather than the original instruction.

Numbers 8:2, Numbers 8:8, Numbers 8:15, Numbers 8:16, Numbers 8:19, Numbers 8:24

5

Closing: Why the Levites were taken, and how the command was carried out

5 min

Finish by tracing the end of the chapter. Yahweh says the Levites are taken instead of Israel’s firstborn and given for service at the Tent of Meeting. Then Moses, Aaron, and all the congregation carry out the command, the Levites begin serving, and the final verses set ages for work and later assistance.

Numbers 8:16, Numbers 8:17, Numbers 8:18, Numbers 8:19, Numbers 8:20, Numbers 8:21, Numbers 8:22, Numbers 8:24, Numbers 8:25, Numbers 8:26

Questions to explore

Which people are named in these instructions, and what does that show about the original audience?

List the people Yahweh speaks to or about in the passage, including Moses, Aaron, the Levites, and the children of Israel.

Numbers 8:1, Numbers 8:2, Numbers 8:6, Numbers 8:9, Numbers 8:10

What happens in the middle of the chapter before the Levites begin their work?

Notice the cleansing actions, the bulls and offerings, the laying on of hands, and the statements about atonement and being set apart.

Numbers 8:7, Numbers 8:8, Numbers 8:12, Numbers 8:13, Numbers 8:15

What reasons does the passage give for the Levites’ service, and what happened after the instructions were given?

Look for the verses about the firstborn, the Tent of Meeting, atonement for the children of Israel, and the report that Moses, Aaron, and the congregation did what Yahweh commanded.

What you’ll need

  • paper
  • pencils
  • coloured pencils or crayons
  • ruler

Try it together

  1. Draw a line down the page to make two columns titled ‘What the passage says’ and ‘Careful response’.
  2. In the first column, write or draw at least six details from Numbers 8, such as Aaron, seven lamps, Levites, bulls, firstborn, Tent of Meeting, twenty-five years, and fifty years.
  3. Add a short note beside each detail to show what the verse says about it.
  4. In the second column, write one or two careful responses that fit the chapter, such as learning to read God’s instructions carefully or seeing that worship service was ordered.
  5. Share one text detail and one careful response with the group.

This chart helps children separate the original instructions for Israel’s worship setting from a thoughtful response today.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, write key words from the chapter on the board for them to copy, and let them draw pictures beside each one.
  • For older or confident readers, ask them to add the exact verse number beside each chart detail and include one sentence about why the Levites were taken instead of the firstborn.

An optional closing prayer

You might pray: ‘God, thank you for speaking clearly. Please help us read carefully, understand what this passage says, and respond with respect.’

Numbers 8

1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

2 “Speak to Aaron, and tell him, ‘When you light the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the lamp stand.’ ”

3 Aaron did so. He lit its lamps to light the area in front of the lamp stand, as Yahweh commanded Moses.

4 This was the workmanship of the lamp stand, beaten work of gold. From its base to its flowers, it was beaten work. He made the lamp stand according to the pattern which Yahweh had shown Moses.

5 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

6 “Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them.

7 You shall do this to them to cleanse them: sprinkle the water of cleansing on them, let them shave their whole bodies with a razor, let them wash their clothes, and cleanse themselves.

8 Then let them take a young bull and its meal offering, fine flour mixed with oil; and another young bull you shall take for a sin offering.

9 You shall present the Levites before the Tent of Meeting. You shall assemble the whole congregation of the children of Israel.

10 You shall present the Levites before Yahweh. The children of Israel shall lay their hands on the Levites,

11 and Aaron shall offer the Levites before Yahweh for a wave offering on the behalf of the children of Israel, that it may be theirs to do the service of Yahweh.

12 “The Levites shall lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, and you shall offer the one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering to Yahweh, to make atonement for the Levites.

13 You shall set the Levites before Aaron and before his sons, and offer them as a wave offering to Yahweh.

14 Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the children of Israel, and the Levites shall be mine.

15 “After that, the Levites shall go in to do the service of the Tent of Meeting. You shall cleanse them, and offer them as a wave offering.

16 For they are wholly given to me from among the children of Israel; instead of all who open the womb, even the firstborn of all the children of Israel, I have taken them to me.

17 For all the firstborn among the children of Israel are mine, both man and animal. On the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified them for myself.

18 I have taken the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel.

19 I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the children of Israel, to do the service of the children of Israel in the Tent of Meeting, and to make atonement for the children of Israel, so that there will be no plague among the children of Israel when the children of Israel come near to the sanctuary.”

20 Moses, and Aaron, and all the congregation of the children of Israel did so to the Levites. According to all that Yahweh commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so the children of Israel did to them.

21 The Levites purified themselves from sin, and they washed their clothes; and Aaron offered them for a wave offering before Yahweh and Aaron made atonement for them to cleanse them.

22 After that, the Levites went in to do their service in the Tent of Meeting before Aaron and before his sons: as Yahweh had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them.

23 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

24 “This is what is assigned to the Levites: from twenty-five years old and upward they shall go in to wait on the service in the work of the Tent of Meeting;

25 and from the age of fifty years they shall retire from doing the work, and shall serve no more,

26 but shall assist their brothers in the Tent of Meeting, to perform the duty, and shall perform no service. This is how you shall have the Levites do their duties.”
