Tobit's Healing, Raphael's Identity and the Family's Future

Tobit 9:1–11:4; Tobit 11:5–19; Tobit 12:1–22; Tobit 14:1–15

This lesson sequence helps children follow the later parts of Tobit: the money is recovered, the family returns, Tobit’s sight is restored, Raphael explains who he is, and Tobit gives final advice to Tobias.

Before you teach

In these chapters of the Catholic additional book of Tobit, Tobias sends Raphael to collect money, returns home with Sarah, sees his parents again, and applies the fish bile to Tobit’s eyes. Raphael then tells them to bless God and reveals that he was sent by God. Tobit later gives thanks, advice, and final instructions before Tobias’ later years are described.

Learning aim

Students will be able to put the account in order, name key choices and outcomes in each part, and state from the passage that God is to be thanked for his works and that mercy and righteousness matter.

Your lesson sequence

Use the teaching outline below for each session, with these reading and activity choices.

Session 1

The money is recovered and the travellers return

Tobit 9:1–11:4

Tobias acts to recover the money, return home, and prepare for meeting his parents.

Try together: Sequence the journey home and identify how concern for family shapes Tobias’ choices.

Session 2

Tobit’s sight is restored

Tobit 11:5–19

Anna sees Tobias coming, Tobit’s sight returns, and the family blesses God with joy.

Try together: Retell the reunion in order and name what Tobit says to God after he sees again.

Session 3

Raphael reveals his identity

Tobit 12:1–22

Raphael tells Tobit and Tobias to bless God for what has happened and says that he was sent by God.

Try together: List Raphael’s instructions and explain who he says sent him.

Session 4

Tobit’s final advice and Tobias’ later life

Tobit 14:1–15

Tobit gives thanks, warns Tobias, urges mercy and righteousness, and the passage ends with Tobias’ later life.

Try together: Identify Tobit’s final instructions and the later outcomes recorded for Tobias.

1

Welcome: Put the story parts in view

4 min

Briefly name the four parts of the sequence: recovering the money and returning, Tobit receiving sight, Raphael revealing his identity, and Tobit’s final advice. Tell children they will listen for choices people make, what happens next, and how often the passage calls people to bless and thank God.

Tobit 9:2, Tobit 11:13, Tobit 12:6, Tobit 14:9

2

Read and explain: Follow the order carefully

8 min

Read the chosen session passage aloud in small sections. Pause to explain clear details from the text, such as Tobias sending Raphael for the money, Anna watching for her son, Tobit blessing God when he sees again, Raphael saying he was sent by God, and Tobit telling Tobias to keep the law and show mercy.

Tobit 9:2, Tobit 11:5, Tobit 11:14, Tobit 12:14, Tobit 14:9

3

Discuss: Choices and outcomes

6 min

Ask children to notice links in the text. Tobias asks for the money to be brought and later insists on returning to his parents. Tobit and Tobias want Raphael rewarded. Raphael tells them to bless God and says he came by the will of their God. Tobit’s final words urge mercy and righteousness. Keep answers tied to the words of the passage.

Tobit 9:2, Tobit 10:9, Tobit 12:1, Tobit 12:6, Tobit 12:18, Tobit 14:9

4

Make and respond: Build the sequence

8 min

Children make simple sequence cards or draw four boxes for the main scenes of the day’s reading. In each box, they add one choice and one outcome from the text. Finish by having them say one sentence of thanks to God based on what the passage actually says God did.

Tobit 11:15, Tobit 12:6, Tobit 12:14, Tobit 12:20

5

Closing: Retell and remember

4 min

Invite pairs to retell the passage in order using the names Tobias, Tobit, Anna, Sarah and Raphael where appropriate. End with one main truth from the reading: the family repeatedly blesses God, and Tobit’s final advice joins mercy, righteousness, and faithful living.

Tobit 11:17, Tobit 12:22, Tobit 14:2, Tobit 14:9

Questions to explore

Why did Tobias send Raphael to Gabael before leaving the wedding feast?

Guide children to mention the money in Rages, Raguel’s oath about the wedding stay, and Tobias’ concern that his father would be grieved if he delayed longer.

Tobit 9:2, Tobit 9:3, Tobit 9:4

What did Raphael tell Tobit and Tobias to do after his identity was revealed?

Look for repeated commands in the passage about blessing God, giving thanks, and speaking about God’s works.

Tobit 12:6, Tobit 12:7, Tobit 12:17, Tobit 12:20

What final instructions did Tobit give Tobias before he died?

Children should point to leaving Nineveh, keeping the law and ordinances, showing mercy and righteousness, and burying his parents.

Tobit 14:8, Tobit 14:9, Tobit 14:10

Four-Part Story Sequence Cards

What you’ll need

  • plain paper or card
  • pencils or textas
  • scissors
  • Bible passage

Try it together

  1. Fold or cut paper into four cards or boxes.
  2. Label them: Money and return, Sight restored, Raphael revealed, Final advice.
  3. Draw one key action and write one short outcome from the passage on each card.
  4. Mix the cards and place them back in order with a partner.
  5. Read the ordered cards aloud and finish with one thank-you sentence to God from the passage.

This helps children sequence the account and connect each part with the choices, outcomes, and thanks to God found in Tobit 9 to 14.

Adapt for your group

  • For ages 6 to 7, give the four headings already written and let children draw instead of writing full sentences.
  • For stronger readers, ask them to add the exact character who speaks or acts in each card and support it with a verse reference.

An optional closing prayer

‘God, thank you for your works in this passage. Please help us to be thankful, merciful, and righteous, and to remember to give you praise.’

Tobit 9

1 And Tobias called Raphael, and said to him,

2 “Brother Azarias, take with you a servant and two camels, and go to Rages of Media to Gabael, and receive the money for me, and bring him to the wedding feast,

3 because Raguel has sworn that I must not depart.

4 My father counts the days; and if I wait long, he will be very grieved.

5 So Raphael went on his way, and lodged with Gabael, and gave him the handwriting; so he brought forth the bags with their seals, and gave them to him.

6 Then they rose up early in the morning together, and came to the wedding feast. Tobias blessed his wife.

Tobit 10

1 Tobit his father counted every day. When the days of the journey were expired, and they didn’t come,

2 he said, “Is he perchance detained? Or is Gabael perchance dead, and there is no one to give him the money?”

3 He was very grieved.

4 But his wife said to him, “The child has perished, seeing he waits long.” She began to bewail him, and said,

5 “I care about nothing, my child, since I have let you go, the light of my eyes.”

6 Tobit said to her, “Hold your peace. Don’t worry. He is in good health.”

7 And she said to him, “Hold your peace. Don’t deceive me. My child has perished.” And she went out every day into the way by which they went, and ate no bread in the day-time, and didn’t stop bewailing her son Tobias for whole nights, until the fourteen days of the wedding feast were expired, which Raguel had sworn that he should spend there. Then Tobias said to Raguel, “Send me away, for my father and my mother look no more to see me.”

8 But his father-in-law said to him, “Stay with me, and I will send to your father, and they will declare to him how things go with you.”

9 Tobias said, “No. Send me away to my father.”

10 Raguel arose, and gave him Sarah his wife, and half his goods, servants and cattle and money;

11 and he blessed them, and sent them away, saying, “The God of heaven will prosper you, my children, before I die.”

12 And he said to his daughter, “Honor your father-in-law and your mother-in-law. They are now your parents. Let me hear a good report of you.” Then he kissed her. Edna said to Tobias, “May the Lord of heaven restore you, dear brother, and grant to me that I may see your children of my daughter Sarah, that I may rejoice before the Lord. Behold, I commit my daughter to you in special trust. Don’t cause her grief.

Tobit 11

1 After these things Tobias also went his way, blessing God because he had prospered his journey; and he blessed Raguel and Edna his wife. Then he went on his way until they drew near to Nineveh.

2 Raphael said to Tobias, “Don’t you know, brother, how you left your father?

3 Let’s run forward before your wife, and prepare the house.

4 But take in your hand the bile of the fish.” So they went their way, and the dog went after them.

5 Anna sat looking around toward the path for her son.

6 She saw him coming, and said to his father, “Behold, your son is coming with the man that went with him!”

7 Raphael said, “I know, Tobias, that your father will open his eyes.

8 Therefore anoint his eyes with the bile, and being pricked with it, he will rub, and will make the white films fall away. Then he will see you.”

9 Anna ran to him, and fell upon the neck of her son, and said to him, “I have seen you, my child! I am ready to die.” They both wept.

10 Tobit went toward the door and stumbled; but his son ran to him,

11 and took hold of his father. He rubbed the bile on his father’s eyes, saying, “Cheer up, my father.”

12 When his eyes began to hurt, he rubbed them.

13 Then the white films peeled away from the corners of his eyes; and he saw his son, and fell upon his neck.

14 He wept, and said, “Blessed are you, O God, and blessed is your name forever! Blessed are all your holy angels!

15 For you scourged, and had mercy on me. Behold, I see my son Tobias.” And his son went in rejoicing, and told his father the great things that had happened to him in Media.

16 Tobit went out to meet his daughter-in-law at the gate of Nineveh, rejoicing and blessing God. Those who saw him go marveled, because he had received his sight.

17 Tobit gave thanks before them, because God had shown mercy on him. When Tobit came near to Sarah his daughter-in-law, he blessed her, saying, “Welcome, daughter! Blessed is God who has brought you to us, and blessed are your father and your mother.” And there was joy among all his kindred who were at Nineveh.

18 Achiacharus and Nasbas his brother’s son came.

19 Tobias’ wedding feast was kept seven days with great gladness.

Tobit 12

1 And Tobit called his son Tobias, and said to him, “See, my child, that the man which went with you have his wages, and you must give him more.”

2 And he said to him, “Father, it is no harm to me to give him the half of those things which I have brought;

3 for he has led me for you in safety, and he cured my wife, and brought my money, and likewise cured you.”

4 The old man said, “It is due to him.”

5 And he called the angel, and said to him, “Take half of all that you have brought.”

6 Then he called them both privately, and said to them, “Bless God, and give him thanks, and magnify him, and give him thanks in the sight of all that live, for the things which he has done with you. It is good to bless God and exalt his name, showing forth with honor the works of God. Don’t be slack to give him thanks.

7 It is good to conceal the secret of a king, but to reveal gloriously the works of God. Do good, and evil won’t find you.

8 Good is prayer with fasting, alms, and righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than much with unrighteousness. It is better to give alms than to lay up gold.

9 Alms delivers from death, and it purges away all sin. Those who give alms and do righteousness will be filled with life;

10 but those who sin are enemies to their own life.

11 Surely I will conceal nothing from you. I have said, ‘It is good to conceal the secret of a king, but to reveal gloriously the works of God.’

12 And now, when you prayed, and Sarah your daughter-in-law, I brought the memorial of your prayer before the Holy One. When you buried the dead, I was with you likewise.

13 And when you didn’t delay to rise up, and leave your dinner, that you might go and cover the dead, your good deed was not hidden from me. I was with you.

14 And now God sent me to heal you and Sarah your daughter-in-law.

15 I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels which present the prayers of the saints and go in before the glory of the Holy One.”

16 And they were both troubled, and fell upon their faces; for they were afraid.

17 And he said to them, “Don’t be afraid. You will all have peace; but bless God forever.

18 For I came not of any favor of my own, but by the will of your God. Therefore bless him forever.

19 All these days I appeared to you. I didn’t eat or drink, but you all saw a vision.

20 Now give God thanks, because I ascend to him who sent me. Write in a book all the things which have been done.”

21 Then they rose up, and saw him no more.

22 They confessed the great and wonderful works of God, and how the angel of the Lord had appeared to them.

Tobit 14

1 Then Tobit finished giving thanks.

2 He was fifty-eight years old when he lost his sight. After eight years, he received it again. He gave alms and he feared the Lord God more and more, and gave thanks to him.

3 Now he grew very old; and he called his son with the six sons of his son, and said to him, “My child, take your sons. Behold, I have grown old, and am ready to depart out of this life.

4 Go into Media, my child, for I surely believe all the things which Jonah the prophet spoke of Nineveh, that it will be overthrown, but in Media there will rather be peace for a season. Our kindred will be scattered on the earth from the good land. Jerusalem will be desolate, and the house of God in it will be burned up, and will be desolate for a time.

5 God will again have mercy on them, and bring them back into the land, and they will build the house, but not like to the former house, until the times of that age are fulfilled. Afterward they will return from the places of their captivity, and build up Jerusalem with honor. The house of God will be built in it forever with a glorious building, even as the prophets spoke concerning it.

6 And all the nations will turn to fear the Lord God truly, and will bury their idols.

7 All the nations will bless the Lord, and his people will give thanks to God, and the Lord will exalt his people; and all those who love the Lord God in truth and righteousness will rejoice, showing mercy to our kindred.

8 And now, my child, depart from Nineveh, because those things which the prophet Jonah spoke will surely come to pass.

9 But you must keep the law and the ordinances, and show yourself merciful and righteous, that it may be well with you.

10 Bury me decently, and your mother with me. Don’t stay at Nineveh. See, my child, what Aman did to Achiacharus who nourished him, how out of light he brought him into darkness, and all the recompense that he made him. Achiacharus was saved, but the other had his recompense, and he went down into darkness. Manasses gave alms, and escaped the snare of death which he set for him; but Aman fell into the snare, and perished.

11 And now, my children, consider what alms does, and how righteousness delivers.” While he was saying these things, he gave up the ghost in the bed; but he was one hundred fifty eight years old. Tobias buried him magnificently.

12 When Anna died, he buried her with his father. But Tobias departed with his wife and his sons to Ecbatana to Raguel his father-in-law,

13 and he grew old in honor, and he buried his father-in-law and mother-in-law magnificently, and he inherited their possessions, and his father Tobit’s.

14 He died at Ecbatana of Media, being one hundred twenty seven years old.

15 Before he died, he heard of the destruction of Nineveh, which Nebuchadnezzar and Ahasuerus took captive. Before his death, he rejoiced over Nineveh.
