Barnabas and Saul Are Sent Out
At Antioch, the Holy Spirit directs the assembly to set apart Barnabas and Saul for God's work.
In the assembly at Antioch, there were prophets and teachers. Luke names Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, a foster brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. These were among the leaders serving in that place.
As they served the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit spoke. Barnabas and Saul were to be set apart for the work God had called them to do. This sending began with God's direction.
Then the group fasted and prayed. After that, they laid their hands on Barnabas and Saul. The passage shows careful attention to this moment, with worship, fasting, and prayer surrounding their commissioning.
Finally, they sent Barnabas and Saul away. The assembly at Antioch did not act first and ask later. They listened to the Holy Spirit, prayed, and then sent these men for the work ahead. How can God's people listen carefully and pray faithfully when sending others to serve?
