Benjamin's Birth, Rachel's Death and Jacob's Homecoming
As Jacob's family travelled from Bethel, Benjamin was born, Rachel died, and Jacob came to Isaac at Mamre.
Jacob's family travelled on from Bethel. Before they reached Ephrath, Rachel went into labour, and it was very hard. A midwife tried to comfort her, saying that this child would be another son.
As Rachel was dying, she named the baby Benoni. His father gave him the name Benjamin instead. Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath, also called Bethlehem.
Jacob set up a pillar at Rachel's grave. Then Israel travelled on and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder. While he was living there, Reuben lay with Bilhah, his father's concubine, and Israel heard of it.
Jacob had twelve sons. Leah's sons were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. Rachel's sons were Joseph and Benjamin. Bilhah's sons were Dan and Naphtali. Zilpah's sons were Gad and Asher.
Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, also called Kiriath Arba, that is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac had lived as foreigners. Isaac lived 180 years. When he died, Esau and Jacob buried him. How do joy and sorrow both appear in this family's journey?
