Daniel and Habakkuk in the Lions' Den
In this Catholic additional episode from Greek Daniel, God cares for Daniel in a lion’s den in an unexpected way.
Catholic additional books. This account comes from the deuterocanonical books, included in Catholic and some other Christian Bibles.
The people of Babylon were furious with their king. They said he had become a Jew, had pulled down Bel, killed the dragon, and put Bel’s priests to the sword. They came to the king and demanded that Daniel be handed over, or they would destroy the king and his house. Under pressure, the king gave Daniel to them.
They threw Daniel into a den of lions, and he was there six days. There were seven lions in the den. Normally the lions were given two carcasses and two sheep each day, but this time no food was given to them, so that they would devour Daniel.
Meanwhile, in Jewry, the prophet Habakkuk had made stew and put broken bread into a bowl. He was taking it to the reapers in the field. Then the angel of the Lord told him to carry that meal to Daniel in Babylon, in the lions’ den. Habakkuk answered that he had never seen Babylon and did not know where the den was.
Then the angel of the Lord took Habakkuk and brought him to Babylon over the den. Habakkuk called out to Daniel to take the dinner God had sent. Daniel thanked God for remembering him and not forsaking those who love him. Daniel got up and ate, and at once the angel of God returned Habakkuk to his own place.
On the seventh day, the king came to mourn for Daniel. He looked into the den and saw Daniel sitting there. The king cried out in praise to the Lord, the God of Daniel. Then he drew Daniel out. The people who had caused Daniel’s destruction were thrown into the den, and the lions devoured them at once. What do you notice about the way God remembered Daniel?
