David's Final Advice and Death
As David's life drew to its close, he gave Solomon final instructions and Solomon became king after him.
When David knew he was near death, he gave a final charge to Solomon his son. He told him to be strong and to keep the instruction of the Lord by walking in his ways and obeying what was written in the law of Moses.
David said the future of his family on Israel's throne was tied to faithfulness. If his sons were careful to walk before the Lord in truth, with all their heart and soul, then the Lord's word about David's line would stand.
David then reminded Solomon about Joab son of Zeruiah. Joab had killed Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether in a time of peace. David told Solomon to act with wisdom and not let Joab go down to the grave in peace.
David also told Solomon to show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite and let them eat at his table, because they had helped David when he fled from Absalom. He also spoke of Shimei son of Gera, who had cursed him. David had sworn not to put Shimei to death himself, but told Solomon not to hold him guiltless.
Then David died and was buried in David's city. He had reigned over Israel for forty years, seven in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem. Chronicles says he died at a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour. Solomon reigned in his place, and his kingdom was firmly established.
