Elijah and the Widow's Son

When the widow’s son stops breathing, Elijah carries him to his room and cries out to the Lord for help.

1 Kings 17:17–24About 2 minutes
Let’s begin

After these things, the widow’s son became very sick. His sickness grew worse and worse until there was no breath left in him. In her grief, the woman spoke to Elijah, the man of God staying in her house, and connected this terrible loss with her own sin.

What happened next

Elijah did not answer her accusation with an argument. He simply asked her to give him the boy. Then he carried the child up to the room where he was staying and laid him on his own bed.

What happened next

There Elijah cried out to the Lord. He spoke about the widow’s pain and asked whether this harm had also come upon the widow with whom he was staying. Then he stretched himself on the child three times and pleaded that the child’s life would come into him again.

What happened next

The Lord listened to Elijah’s voice. The child’s life returned, and he revived. Elijah brought him down from the room into the house and placed him in his mother’s arms, saying that her son was alive.

The end

Then the woman answered Elijah with new certainty. Now she knew that he was a man of God, and that the Lord’s word in his mouth was truth. Her household had seen both deep sorrow and the Lord’s mercy. What do you notice about Elijah’s prayer and the woman’s response?
