Jeremiah Is Put in the Stocks
Jeremiah was punished in Yahweh’s house, but after his release he still delivered Yahweh’s hard message to Pashhur.
Pashhur son of Immer was a priest and the chief officer in Yahweh’s house. He heard Jeremiah prophesying there. Jeremiah was speaking a message from Yahweh, but Pashhur turned against him.
Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks at the upper Gate of Benjamin in Yahweh’s house. Jeremiah was held there because of what he had been prophesying.
The next day, Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks. Then Jeremiah spoke to him. He said Yahweh was no longer calling him Pashhur, but Magormissabib, a name that means terror on every side.
Jeremiah announced Yahweh’s judgement. Pashhur would become a terror to himself and to all his friends. They would fall by the sword of their enemies, and Pashhur would see it. Yahweh would give Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, who would carry people captive to Babylon and kill with the sword.
Jeremiah also said that the riches of the city, its treasures, and the treasures of Judah’s kings would be handed to their enemies and carried to Babylon. Pashhur and all who lived in his house would go into captivity. In Babylon he would die and be buried, along with the friends to whom he had prophesied falsely.
