Jesus Heals a Man at a Sabbath Meal
At a Sabbath meal, Jesus healed a sick man and asked whether mercy could be refused on the Sabbath.
One Sabbath, Jesus went to eat at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees. The people there were watching him closely. In front of Jesus was a man suffering from severe swelling.
Jesus spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees. He asked whether it was lawful to heal on the Sabbath. They gave him no answer.
Then Jesus took the man, healed him, and let him go. He did not leave the man there without help.
After that, Jesus answered them with a question. If a son or an ox fell into a well on the Sabbath, who would not pull him out straight away?
They could not answer what Jesus said. At that meal, Jesus' words showed that people knew urgent help should not be refused on the Sabbath. How do Jesus' question and action help you think about mercy?
