Jesus Heals Bartimaeus near Jericho

As Jesus left Jericho, Bartimaeus kept calling for mercy until Jesus stopped and restored his sight.

Matthew 20:29–34; Mark 10:46–52; Luke 18:35–43About 2 minutes
Let’s begin

Jesus came to Jericho, and as he was leaving with his disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus was sitting by the road. When he heard that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by, he began to cry out for mercy and called him the Son of David.

What happened next

Many people warned Bartimaeus to be quiet, but he cried out even more. Jesus stopped and told the people to call him. So they spoke to the blind man and told him to get up, because Jesus was calling for him.

What happened next

Bartimaeus threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. Jesus asked what he wanted him to do. Bartimaeus answered respectfully and said that he wanted to see again.

What happened next

Jesus told him that his faith had made him well. Immediately Bartimaeus received his sight and followed Jesus on the way. The man who had been begging beside the road now went after Jesus instead.

The end

Mark names Bartimaeus and tells the story as Jesus leaves Jericho. In the other Gospel accounts, the blind man or men also cry for mercy, Jesus stops, and sight is given at once. What do you notice about Bartimaeus refusing to be silent when he needed help?

A children’s retelling of Matthew 20:29–34; Mark 10:46–52; Luke 18:35–43. You can read the Bible passage together too.

This retelling follows Mark as the main account. Matthew mentions two blind men as Jesus goes out from Jericho, while Luke describes one blind man as Jesus comes near Jericho.
