Jesus Heals Ten Men with Leprosy

On the borderlands, ten men ask Jesus for mercy, and one returns to thank God when he is healed.

Luke 17:11–19About 2 minutes
Let’s begin

As Jesus travelled toward Jerusalem, he passed along the border between Samaria and Galilee. When he came near a village, ten men with leprosy met him. They did not come close, but called out from a distance, asking Jesus, their Master, to have mercy on them.

What happened next

Jesus saw them and told them to go and show themselves to the priests. They obeyed and went. On the way, they were cleansed. The change did not wait until they reached the priests. As they were going, they were healed.

What happened next

One of the ten noticed that he had been healed. He turned back, praising God in a loud voice. Then he came to Jesus, fell at his feet, and thanked him. Luke tells us that this man was a Samaritan.

What happened next

Jesus pointed out that ten had been cleansed, yet only one had returned to give glory to God. He drew attention to the fact that this thankful man was a foreigner. Then Jesus told him to get up and go on his way, saying that his faith had made him well.

The end

All ten men were cleansed, but only one came back with thanks and praise to God. Jesus noticed both the healing and the thankful return. When we remember God's mercy, do we turn back with thanks too?
