Jesus Raises the Widow's Son at Nain

Near the gate of Nain, Jesus met a grieving mother and showed compassionate power.

Luke 7:11–17About 2 minutes
Let’s begin

Soon afterwards, Jesus went to a town called Nain. Many of his disciples went with him, along with a large crowd. As he came near the town gate, a funeral procession was coming out of the city.

What happened next

The person who had died was a young man, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. Many people from the city were with her in her sorrow.

What happened next

When the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her. He told her, 'Do not cry.' Then he went over and touched the coffin, and the men carrying it stood still.

What happened next

Jesus said to the dead young man, 'Arise.' The young man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

The end

Everyone was filled with awe, and they praised God. They said, 'A great prophet has arisen among us,' and, 'God has visited his people.' The report about Jesus spread through Judea and the surrounding region. What does this story show you about the way Jesus sees human grief?
