Joseph in Potiphar's House and Prison
In Egypt, Joseph serves faithfully, refuses a sinful demand, and is sent to prison after a false accusation.
Joseph was taken down to Egypt and bought by Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard. The Lord was with Joseph there. Potiphar saw that the Lord made Joseph’s work prosper, so he placed him over his household.
From that time, the Lord blessed Potiphar’s house and fields because of Joseph. Potiphar left everything in Joseph’s care except the food he ate. Joseph was well-built and handsome.
Then Potiphar’s wife tried to persuade Joseph to lie with her. Joseph refused. He would not betray his master’s trust, and he would not sin against God. Even when she spoke to him day after day, Joseph would not listen or stay with her.
One day Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house were inside. She grabbed his garment and urged him again. Joseph ran outside, leaving the garment behind. She used it to make a false accusation before the men of the house and later before her husband.
When Potiphar heard his wife’s words, his anger burned. He put Joseph in the prison where the king’s prisoners were kept. But the Lord was still with Joseph, showing him kindness. Soon the keeper of the prison trusted Joseph with responsibility over the prisoners there.
