Moses Sees the Land and Dies

From Mount Nebo, Moses saw the land God was giving Israel, and there in Moab his life came to an end.

Deuteronomy 32:48–52; Deuteronomy 34:1–12About 3 minutes
Let’s begin

The Lord spoke to Moses and told him to go up the mountain of Abarim, Mount Nebo in the land of Moab, across from Jericho. From there he would look at the land of Canaan, the land God was giving to the people of Israel.

What happened next

God also told Moses that he would die on the mountain and be gathered to his people, as Aaron had died before him. Moses would see the land from a distance, but he would not enter it, because at the waters of Meribah he had failed to honour God as holy among the people.

What happened next

So Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah opposite Jericho. There the Lord showed him the land, stretching across Gilead to Dan, and all Naphtali, Ephraim, Manasseh, Judah to the Western Sea, the south, and the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar.

What happened next

Then the Lord said that this was the land he had sworn to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and their offspring. Moses had now seen it with his own eyes, but he would not go over into it. There in the land of Moab, Moses the servant of the Lord died, as the Lord had said.

What happened next

The Lord buried Moses in a valley in Moab opposite Beth Peor, and no one knew his tomb. Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his sight and strength had not failed. Israel wept for him for thirty days in the plains of Moab.

The end

Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him, and the people listened to him. The book closes by saying that no prophet like Moses had arisen in Israel, for the Lord knew him face to face, and through him God had done great signs and mighty deeds before all Israel. What do you notice about the way Israel remembered Moses?
