Othniel Delivers Israel
After Israel turned from the Lord, they served a foreign king until the Lord raised up Othniel to save them.
The people of Israel did what was evil in the Lord’s sight. They forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth. Israel turned away from the Lord instead of being faithful to him.
So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel. He sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia, and the people of Israel served him for eight years.
Then the people of Israel cried to the Lord for help. The Lord raised up a saviour for them, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, and Othniel saved them.
The Spirit of the Lord came on Othniel, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord gave Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into Othniel’s hand. Othniel prevailed against him.
After that, the land had rest for forty years. Then Othniel son of Kenaz died. In this short account, Israel sinned, cried out, and the Lord raised a deliverer.
