Solomon Asks for Wisdom
When God invited Solomon to ask for a gift, the young king asked for wisdom to lead God's people well.
Solomon, David's son, was firmly established as king. He loved Yahweh and followed the statutes of David his father, though he also sacrificed at the high places. The temple had not yet been built, so Solomon went to Gibeon, where the great high place stood. There, at the Tent of Meeting and the bronze altar, he offered a thousand burnt offerings to God.
That night at Gibeon, God appeared to Solomon. In 1 Kings, this appearance is described as a dream. God told him to ask for what should be given to him. The king was invited to speak openly before God about what he needed most for his calling.
Solomon began by remembering God's great kindness to David his father. He said that God had now made him king over a people too many to count. Solomon did not pretend he was already sufficient for the task. He said he was like a little child in this work, and he asked for wisdom, knowledge, and an understanding heart to judge the people rightly.
This request pleased the Lord. Solomon had not asked for long life, or riches, or the lives of his enemies. He had asked for understanding to discern justice. So God granted him wisdom and understanding. In 1 Kings, God says none would be like Solomon in this wise and understanding heart. In 2 Chronicles, God also promises extraordinary riches, wealth, and honour.
God also gave Solomon what he had not asked for. In Kings, God added that if Solomon walked in his ways and kept his commandments, his days would be lengthened. Solomon awoke and realised it had been a dream. Then he came to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of Yahweh's covenant, offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and made a feast for his servants.
