READ TOGETHER. LISTEN TOGETHER.
The Friend at Midnight
Jesus told a short parable about a late-night request, a reluctant friend, and determined asking.
Jesus asked his listeners to picture a man going to a friend at midnight to ask for help. He asks to borrow three loaves of bread.
The bread is not only for himself. A friend has arrived from a journey, and the man has nothing to set before his guest.
From inside the house, the other friend answers that the door is already shut. He says his children are in bed with him, and he cannot get up to give him anything.
Jesus said the man inside would not get up just because they were friends. But the man at the door keeps pressing his request.
Because of that persistence, the friend finally gets up and gives him what he needs, even as much as he needs.
