The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
At Pentecost, God gave a clear sign of the Holy Spirit, and many people responded by turning to Jesus and being baptised.
On the day of Pentecost, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound came from heaven like a powerful rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
Then what looked like tongues of fire appeared and were shared among them, with one resting on each person. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them.
In Jerusalem there were devout Jews from many nations. When the sound was heard, a crowd gathered and was bewildered. Each person heard them speaking in his own language about the mighty works of God.
The people were amazed and puzzled. Some asked what it all meant. Others mocked and said they were full of new wine. Later, when they heard Peter's message, many were cut to the heart and asked Peter and the other apostles what they should do.
Peter told them to repent and be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and they would receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. He urged them with many words, and about three thousand people were baptised and added that day.
