Blessings for a Defiled People

Haggai 2:10–19 uses priestly rulings about holiness and uncleanness to explain the people’s condition before Yahweh. It then looks back on failed harvests and ends with a dated promise of blessing.

Understanding the passage

The setting of this message

On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month in Darius’s second year, Yahweh’s word came through Haggai. He tells Haggai to ask the priests about the law, then applies their answers to the people, their work, and their offerings. He also calls them to consider earlier hardship and a new word from “today”.

Haggai 2:10–19

Main takeaway

This passage teaches that the people’s uncleanness affected their offerings and work, yet Yahweh also marked a day from which he said he would bless them.

01A legal question begins the messageThe passage starts with a precise date and says Yahweh’s word came by Haggai. Haggai is told to ask the priests concerning the law.

Explanation

The passage starts with a precise date and says Yahweh’s word came by Haggai. Haggai is told to ask the priests concerning the law. That detail matters because the message begins with an authorised ruling about holiness and uncleanness before it is applied directly to the people.

02Holiness does not spread by touchThe first example asks whether holy meat carried in a garment can make other food holy by contact.

Explanation

The first example asks whether holy meat carried in a garment can make other food holy by contact. The priests answer no. In this case, touching something associated with holiness does not pass holiness on to bread, stew, wine, oil, or other food.

03Uncleanness does spread, and Yahweh applies itThe second example asks whether a person unclean because of a dead body makes food unclean by touch.

Explanation

The second example asks whether a person unclean because of a dead body makes food unclean by touch. The priests answer yes. Haggai then says this is how “this people” and “this nation” are before Yahweh, including the work of their hands and what they offer.

04Look back at hardship and disciplineYahweh tells them to consider the time before work on the temple, when expected amounts fell short.

Explanation

Yahweh tells them to consider the time before work on the temple, when expected amounts fell short. A heap of twenty became ten, and fifty from the wine vat became twenty. He says he struck their work with blight, mildew, and hail, yet they did not turn to him.

05From today, a promise of blessingYahweh again says to consider this date, linked with the foundation of the temple. The seed is still in the barn, and the vine, fig tree, pomegranate, and olive tree have not produced.

Explanation

Yahweh again says to consider this date, linked with the foundation of the temple. The seed is still in the barn, and the vine, fig tree, pomegranate, and olive tree have not produced. Even so, Yahweh says, “From today I will bless you.”

Questions to explore

Pause, look back at the verses and talk together.

01What is the difference between the two priestly answers?

One answer says holiness does not pass by touch, while the other says uncleanness does pass by touch, and Haggai uses that contrast in his message.

02How does Yahweh describe the earlier period?

List the shortages in measures and the blows on their work: blight, mildew, and hail.

03Why does verse 19 stand out at the end?

The crops have not produced yet, but Yahweh still says, “From today I will bless you.”

Haggai 2:10–19

10In the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, Yahweh’s word came by Haggai the prophet, saying,

11“Yahweh of Armies says: Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,

12‘If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and with his fold touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any food, will it become holy?’ ” The priests answered, “No.”

13Then Haggai said, “If one who is unclean by reason of a dead body touches any of these, will it be unclean?” The priests answered, “It will be unclean.”

14Then Haggai answered, “ ‘So is this people, and so is this nation before me,’ says Yahweh; ‘and so is every work of their hands. That which they offer there is unclean.

15Now, please consider from this day and backward, before a stone was laid on a stone in Yahweh’s temple.

16Through all that time, when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty, there were only twenty.

17I struck you with blight, mildew, and hail in all the work of your hands; yet you didn’t turn to me,’ says Yahweh.

18‘Consider, please, from this day and backward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, since the day that the foundation of Yahweh’s temple was laid, consider it.

19Is the seed yet in the barn? Yes, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree haven’t produced. From today I will bless you.’ ”
