02The Lord’s works are ordered and sustainedSirach says the Lord’s works were set in place “from the beginning” and given boundaries. His works are arranged for all time, continue without weariness, and do not disobey his word.
Explanation
Sirach says the Lord’s works were set in place “from the beginning” and given boundaries. His works are arranged for all time, continue without weariness, and do not disobey his word. Then the earth is pictured as filled with blessing and with living creatures that cover its surface and return to it.
03Human beings are earth-made, limited, and entrustedHumanity is created out of earth and returns to it, so people are not permanent in themselves.
Explanation
Humanity is created out of earth and returns to it, so people are not permanent in themselves. Yet the Lord gives them numbered days, authority over earthly things, strength fitting for them, and likeness to his own image. He also gives them dominion over beasts and birds, showing both dignity and responsibility.
04Understanding, praise, and covenantThe Lord gives people counsel, speech, senses, and a heart for understanding. He fills them with wisdom, shows them good and evil, and directs their hearts to see the majesty of his works.
Explanation
The Lord gives people counsel, speech, senses, and a heart for understanding. He fills them with wisdom, shows them good and evil, and directs their hearts to see the majesty of his works. This leads to praise. He also gives knowledge, a “law of life”, an everlasting covenant, decrees, and a command to avoid unrighteousness toward neighbours.
