01Thanks after anger turns awayThe passage begins with a first-person response: “I will give thanks to you, Yahweh”. The reason is clear in the verse itself.
Explanation
The passage begins with a first-person response: “I will give thanks to you, Yahweh”. The reason is clear in the verse itself. Yahweh had been angry, but that anger “has turned away” and he now comforts. The focus is not on explaining the earlier anger, but on thankful praise for comfort received.
02Trust replaces fearNext, the speaker declares, “God is my salvation.” Because God saves, the response is trust rather than fear.
Explanation
Next, the speaker declares, “God is my salvation.” Because God saves, the response is trust rather than fear. Yahweh is called “my strength and song”, which shows both help and praise. The repeated statement “he has become my salvation” keeps attention on God as the source of rescue, not on human ability.
03Joy like drawing waterVerse 3 uses a picture: drawing water “out of the wells of salvation”. Water is presented as something drawn with joy, so salvation is described as a rich and life-giving source.
Explanation
Verse 3 uses a picture: drawing water “out of the wells of salvation”. Water is presented as something drawn with joy, so salvation is described as a rich and life-giving source. Isaiah does not turn this into a story here. It remains a vivid image that teaches joyful participation in God’s saving provision.
04Praise that spreads outwardThe passage then returns to “In that day” and lists several commands: give thanks, call on Yahweh’s name, declare his doings, and proclaim that his name is exalted.
Explanation
The passage then returns to “In that day” and lists several commands: give thanks, call on Yahweh’s name, declare his doings, and proclaim that his name is exalted. Praise is not kept private. What Yahweh has done is to be made known “among the peoples”, reaching beyond one worshipper’s experience.
05The Holy One is great among youThe closing verses call for singing, crying aloud, and shouting. Yahweh has “done excellent things”, and this should be known “in all the earth”.
Explanation
The closing verses call for singing, crying aloud, and shouting. Yahweh has “done excellent things”, and this should be known “in all the earth”. The final reason for loud joy is God’s presence and greatness: “the Holy One of Israel is great among you”. Worship grows from who he is and what he has done.

02How does verse 2 connect salvation with trust and fear?
Notice the chain of thought in the verse: because God is salvation, the speaker says, “I will trust, and will not be afraid.”
03How far should praise of Yahweh spread in verses 4–6?
The passage mentions “among the peoples” and “in all the earth”, so the praise is meant to be widely declared.

1In that day you will say, “I will give thanks to you, Yahweh; for though you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you comfort me.
2Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Yah, Yahweh, is my strength and song; and he has become my salvation.”
3Therefore with joy you will draw water out of the wells of salvation.
4In that day you will say, “Give thanks to Yahweh! Call on his name! Declare his doings among the peoples! Proclaim that his name is exalted!
5Sing to Yahweh, for he has done excellent things! Let this be known in all the earth!
6Cry aloud and shout, you inhabitant of Zion, for the Holy One of Israel is great among you!”
