The Vision of the Horns and the Craftsmen

Zechariah sees two sets of four figures in this short vision: horns and craftsmen. The angel explains what they mean, so the passage helps readers notice both the harm done to Judah and Yahweh’s answer to it.

01Zechariah sees four hornsThe vision begins simply: Zechariah lifts his eyes and sees four horns. The text does not first explain what a horn is meant to represent, so the reader waits for the interpretation.

Explanation

The vision begins simply: Zechariah lifts his eyes and sees four horns. The text does not first explain what a horn is meant to represent, so the reader waits for the interpretation. In this passage, the meaning comes through Zechariah’s question and the angel’s answer.

02The horns represent scattering powerWhen Zechariah asks about the horns, the angel explains that they are the horns which scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.

Explanation

When Zechariah asks about the horns, the angel explains that they are the horns which scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem. Later the explanation adds that Judah was scattered so severely that no man lifted up his head. The horns therefore picture force used against Judah, Israel, Jerusalem, and the land of Judah.

03Yahweh shows four craftsmenAfter the horns, Yahweh shows Zechariah four craftsmen. Zechariah again asks what they are coming to do.

Explanation

After the horns, Yahweh shows Zechariah four craftsmen. Zechariah again asks what they are coming to do. The passage does not describe their tools or appearance. The important point is their purpose, which is explained by the angel rather than guessed by the reader.

04The craftsmen come against the hornsThe angel says the craftsmen have come to terrify and cast down the horns of the nations that lifted up their horn against the land of Judah to scatter it.

Explanation

The angel says the craftsmen have come to terrify and cast down the horns of the nations that lifted up their horn against the land of Judah to scatter it. The same image of a horn now highlights proud, hostile power. The vision ends with those powers facing opposition and removal.

19I asked the angel who talked with me, “What are these?” He answered me, “These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.”

20Yahweh showed me four craftsmen.

21Then I asked, “What are these coming to do?” He said, “These are the horns which scattered Judah, so that no man lifted up his head; but these have come to terrify them, to cast down the horns of the nations that lifted up their horn against the land of Judah to scatter it.”
