Getting ready
Age & adult help
Following several illustrated panels and reading speech or story text adds a literacy demand to the colouring.
Read panels aloud and help children follow their order. Check the story and wording before using it with younger children.
What you’ll need
Printer, paper, colouring pencils or crayons. An adult reader may be helpful for younger children.
Time & preparation
One comic page, including colouring. Shared reading and discussion are additional.
Age is an editorial estimate for the motor and reading demands of this format. Difficulty, completion time and suggested tools are planning estimates, not build-tested.
Check the file before you print for a group, and allow for any extra help the kids might need.
Printing tipsThe story behind the craft
Bible passage: Numbers 22:21–35
Balaam rides towards Moab while his donkey repeatedly turns aside from an angel he cannot see. After Balaam strikes her, the donkey speaks; his eyes are opened, and he is confronted about his actions.
Main takeaway: Balaam must recognise both his limited understanding and his mistreatment of the donkey.
While you colour the panels
Read the panels in order, pausing at a change in a character’s action or understanding.
Compare what the donkey sees with what Balaam initially sees. Discuss patient care for animals rather than recreating the blows.
Younger learners can describe an action in one panel. Older learners can compare a caption with its Bible passage and discuss what a short comic leaves out.
Questions to explore
- Why did the donkey stop?
- What had Balaam failed to notice?
- How should we respond when an animal seems frightened or unwilling?
Common questions
What files are included in this download?
The download is a 1-page PDF: BalaamandHisTalkingDonkey_Numbers22.pdf. This is the English edition. You print the files yourself; physical supplies are not included.
Is this a comic to read or a colouring sheet?
It combines both on one page: outlined comic panels with story captions. Read the panels in sequence, then colour and talk about the illustrated moments. It is a flat printable, with no paper mechanism to assemble. Printed captions include “Balaam goes with the princes, but God is angry with him” and “Balaam is called by Balak to curse Israel, but God says no”.
Which pages should I print, and at what size?
The original PDF pages are A4 portrait. BalaamandHisTalkingDonkey_Numbers22.pdf: print the page for each learner or group. Print single-sided. On US Letter paper, select Letter and Fit or shrink to the printable area; the originals are not separate Letter-sized files.
