Printing tips

The story behind the craft

Bible passage: John 6:1–13

A crowd gathers to hear Jesus, and a boy’s five barley loaves and two fish are brought forward. Jesus gives thanks and distributes food; everyone eats, and twelve baskets of pieces remain.

Main takeaway: Jesus responds to the crowd’s hunger with generous provision.

As the picture changes

View the folded design from each side and compare the two images before explaining their connection.

Count the loaves and fish, then compare the small beginning with the baskets left over. Talk about gratitude and sharing rather than promising food will multiply in an activity.

Younger learners can describe what changes as they move. Older learners can explain whether the images show a before-and-after moment or two parts of the same account.

Questions to explore

  • What food did the boy have?
  • What did Jesus do before sharing it?
  • What could we share with someone who needs help?

Common questions

What files are included in this download?

The download is a 3-page PDF: Feedingthe5000.pdf. This is the English edition. You print the files yourself; physical supplies are not included.

How do the two pictures appear?

Colour the picture strips, cut them out and paste them onto the backing in A–J order. Let the glue dry, then make the alternating accordion folds. Look from the left and right to see the two different pictures. The effect comes from the folds, with no screen or moving parts. The pictured scenes include: Boy offering his loaves and fish; Crowd joyful with baskets full.

Which pages should I print, and at what size?

The original PDF pages are A4 landscape. Feedingthe5000.pdf: print pages 1, 2 for each learner or group. Page 3 is the assembly guide, which can be shared. Print single-sided. On US Letter paper, select Letter and Fit or shrink to the printable area; the originals are not separate Letter-sized files. Keep matching construction pages at the same scale.

What supplies and preparation does this need?

Paper, colouring pencils, scissors and glue. A ruler can help make straight creases. Adult help is useful for the narrow strips, alphabetical order and even folds.

What help might children need with this activity?

Suggested ages: 8–12 years. Help with trimming the narrow strips, arranging them in order and making even folds. Adjust this guide for the child’s reading and making skills.
